This somewhat obscure LP from the collector's Jazzology label features the 1956 version of Eddie Condon's band, a septet starring the great cornetist Wild Bill Davison, trombonist Cutty Cutshall and clarinetist Bob Wilber. Nothing all that surprising occurs, other than a four-song ballad medley, but these freewheeling performances (the best are "At the Jazz Band Ball," "High Society" and Wild Bill's feature on "I Can't Give You Anything But Love") will be enjoyed by Dixieland fans. ~ Scott Yanow

Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader.
