Recorded in 1979. Originally released on Folkways (03539). Includes liner notes by Barry Lee Pearson.
Edwards presented a mixture of originals and covers of songs by the likes of Tommy Johnson, Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Charley Patton, and Memphis Minnie on this solo country blues session, originally issued by Folkways in 1979. There's nothing extraordinary about this album, true, but it's solid Delta blues that feels lived in. Edwards does much to add interest and variety to the material by varying between chording and single-string playing and high and low notes, and changing the rhythms unpredictably, sometimes with a stop-start feel. His husky voice is warm and communicative, if not as distinctive as some of the legends he hung out with, which included Patton, Robert Johnson, and others. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Curtis Mayfield Curtis CD (1970) Deluxe Edition
Mississippi Delta Bluesman CD music
$7.39 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this song is a brazen attack on social mores, racism, the Vietnam War, religious impropriety, and Nixon-era politics.
"We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is another track that poignantly examines the race and class struggles of urban America. This song is made up of more than just a static groove; its tempos shift midway through and powerful ...
| | Suicide First Album CDs (1977)
Mississippi Delta Bluesman music CDs
$12.59 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone punctuated by sleazy groans and horrifying screams, still induce nervous tension despite the passing years. To hear Alan Vega, an Elvis caricature out of time, crooning ...
