When this DIANA & MARVIN was recorded in 1973, both Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye were at their commercial peak, although artistically they were heading in different directions. Nevertheless, their vocal blend was superb, so a duet album made both musical and sales sense. The resulting product was not only a chart hit but stands up well alongside the better known duets Gaye recorded with Kim Weston and (especially) Tammi Terrell. The material here, much of it crafted especially for the duo by Ashford and Simpson (of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough Fame,") is uniformly strong, and there are some very interesting covers, including a lovely and impassioned take on the Stylistics' "You Are Everything" and a soaring, gospel-flavored version of Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love."
Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal).

I found a gold mine! I had looked for this CD for many years in stores and they never had it in stock. If you love Marvin and you love Diana, you're going to love this CD. A classic! Submitted by deemozip (FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great love songs Every song is beautiful and I was even happy with the bonus tracks which I had never heard before. A must have cd if you like Diana Ross and/or Marvin Gaye. Submitted by a reviewer (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Get it!! The first time I heard this almbum was when I was trying to download (legally of course) 'You Are Everything'. i then stumbled upon this album and the best ever song i have heard was 'Alone'. just a sweet sensual love song. Apparantly Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross weren't even in the same room when recording this. But you don't notice anything.Get it!!! Submitted by fauna27_04 (London, England) Was This Review Helpful? a classic ruined by re-mixing and revisionism Unfortunately the team at the "new" Motown, in their zeal to rewrite history, have re-mixed these songs to feature (or should I saw market) the career of a dead black artist (the kind record corporations seem to love the best) Gaye at the risk of Diana Ross'performance which shone so brilliantly in the orginal release mixes of these songs. Originally, producer Gordy wisely toned down Gaye's over-singing and over-"souling" and featured Ross' subtle stylings; in the process redefining the meaning of soul music. Look for the original mix of this classic on eBay. Submitted by belton (Philadelphia, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Diana & Marvin
$7.59 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson
