With "Common Ground," Chapin delivers his first new studio release in nearly a decade -- and it's a masterpiece. From the anthemic title track to the bluesy "Not Tired of Love" to the humorous "Martha & Oprah," each track hits the mark. Chapin, known for almost three decades now as a hard-working road warrior performing 150-175 shows per year, has one of the most wide-ranging audiences in the business: from the younger generations who know him from his family recordings, to older folk and folk/rock aficianados who are more familiar with his adult-oriented recordings.
Recorded at Headline Sounds, Irvington, New York and Cobert Operations, Chappaqua, New York.
Personnel includes: Tom Chapin (vocals, acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, banjo, mandolin, autoharp); Barry Mitterhoff (mandolin); Kenny Kosek (fiddle); Jon Corbert (accordion, keyboards, background vocals); Michael Mark (bass, background vocals); Abigail Chapin, Lily Chapin, Jessica Craven (background vocals).
Producers: Tom Chapin, Jon Cobert, Joe Di GiGiorgi.

$10.09 Based on the play by Ernest Thompson, ON GOLDEN POND tells the deceptively simple tale of one family's summer. The story centers around the bickering but loving relationship between Ethel and Norman Thayer (Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda), an elderly couple who are spending their 48th summer at their New England country home and celebrating Norman's 80th birthday. When their independent, insecure daughter, Chelsea (Jane Fonda), and her new boyfriend, Bill Ray (Dabney Coleman), come for Norman's birthday, they also end up asking the couple to look after Billy Ray (Doug McKeon), Bill's teenage ...
| | Dave Brubeck For All Time CDs (2004) Box Set
Common Ground album
$36.69 The box set FOR ALL TIME contains: TIME OUT (1959)/TIME FURTHER OUT (1961)/TIME IN OUTER SPACE (1962)/TIME CHANGES (1964)/TIME IN (1966).
Recorded between 1959 & 1966. Includes liner notes by Steve Race, Dan Brubeck, Rayburn Wright, Teo Macero and Dave Brubeck.
This five-CD box set collects all five of the Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time series recordings: Time Out, Time Further Out, Countdown: Time in Outer Space, Time Changes, and Time In, with bonus material attached to three of the discs. Of this quintet of recordings, the latter three have never been available on CD in the United States. Recorded between 1959 and 1965, each of these titles has a distinct relationship to "time travel" in the context of jazz. Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and company were consciously trying to extend the time-space continuum in jazz, and erase the boundaries of imposed four/four signatures in the idiom. Time ...

| | Clay Walker Say No More CD (2001)
Common Ground album
$5.95 Like his Beaumont, Texas homeboy Mark Chesnutt, Clay Walker's a "stealth" country star--he's been racking up the hits for years, but he hasn't won many awards, and he's not exactly a Tonight Show regular. But being out of the spotlight gives Walker plenty of artistic freedom, as evidenced by his seventh CD, SAY NO MORE.
This wildly diverse album touches on nearly every style of country music, from honky-tonk to Western swing, not to mention Tex-Mex, power ballads, and Christian country. What holds it all together are Walker's stellar vocals--one minute he's Ritchie Valens reborn on a faithful, Spanish language remake of "La Bamba," the next he's a latter-day Merle Haggard, honky-tonkin' his way through "Rough Around the Edges." Other highlights include the hard-country weeper "Can I Ask You Not to Dance," and the title track, with its complex yet catchy melody. Too much stylistic variation isn't usually advisable for a country artist, but for Walker, whose ability to fly beneath the radar prevents him from being painted into a corner artistically, it works just fine. SAY NO MORE is a thoroughly enjoyable collection from a talented singer who deserves a higher profile.

| | Michael Martin Murphey Ultimate Collection CD (2001)
Common Ground CD music
$11.99 Recorded between 1967 and 1987. Includes liner notes by Robyn Flans.
Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Hollywood, California).
Michael Martin Murphey presents great challenges to anyone trying to construct a one-disc compilation of his work. For one thing, he has recorded for several record companies, all of which have catalogs now controlled by different major labels: A&M (Universal) 1972-1973; Epic (Sony), 1973-1981; Liberty (EMI), 1982-1983; and Warner Bros. (Warner) (1986-1997). (He has recorded independently since 1998.) For another, he has had at least three different careers, one in the 1970s as a pop singer/songwriter, another in the 1980s as a country singer, and a third as a Western artist. The least likely label to assemble a compilation would seem to be Universal, which possesses only two of his albums. But Hip-O, Universal's reissue arm, is nothing if not ambitious, and so we have this Ultimate Collection. You've got to admit that they've made an effort. No less than ...
