Scene Glass: Early Keyboard Music / Steffen Schleiermacher
$7.59 Recorded live at the New Orleans House, Berkeley, California on September 16, 1969. Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin.
It is only fitting that Hot Tuna's self-titled 1969 debut (also known as RECORDED LIVE) would be an in-concert, all-acoustic set. The band would make themselves one of rock & roll's top road dogs during their lengthy career, and would return to acoustic work time and time again. Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen (guitar/vocals) and Jack Casady (bass) launched this side project to co-exist with their full-time job with the band, while musically getting back to their folk/acoustic roots.
The CD reissue adds five songs to the original track listing, rounding out such highlights as "Hesitation Blues" (which would become a stage staple for Tuna), Reverend Gary Davis's "Death Don't Have No Mercy," and "Winin' Boy Blues." There is a great sense of ease and rapport between Kaukonen and Casady, and though the sound is quite minimal--the duo plays alone save some harmonica work from Will Scarlett--HOT TUNA remains one of the band's most satisfying releases.
When Hot Tuna's self-titled debut album was released in May 1970, it seemed like the perfect spin-off project for a major rock group, Jefferson Airplane's lead guitarist and bass player indulging in a genre exercise by playing a set of old folk-blues tunes in a Berkeley coffeehouse. The music seemed as far removed from the Airplane's acid rock roar as it did from commercial prospects, and thus, it allowed these sometimes overlooked bandmembers to blow off ...
| | Harold Budd Pavilion Of Dreams CD (1978)
Scene Glass: Early Keyboard Music / Steffen Schleiermacher
$7.99 In 1978, THE PAVILION OF DREAMS marked Harold Budd's arrival on the international music scene. Decades removed, this release is still unique given its compositional grace and clever mixture of musical styles. On this album, Budd's music blends minimalism with contemporary classical and jazz balladry. The result is the emerging sound of ambient music, a style that was still new at the time.
THE PAVILION OF DREAMS includes four pieces. Unlike most modern ambient music, Budd's compositions feature chamber ensembles. Moreover, his work never falls back on electronics or washy keyboard patches. The longest composition, "Bismillahi 'Rrahman 'Rrahim," draws on the music ...

Scene Glass: Early Keyboard Music / Steffen Schleiermacher
$7.15 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1999, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Listening to this classic 1967 LP, the keen-eared might note that the melody to "On The Banks Of The Wichita" was lifted directly from Ravi Shankar's 1962 "Theme From Pather Panchali." ...

Scene Glass: Early Keyboard Music / Steffen Schleiermacher
$13.75 In an era when the definition of religious music has expanded to include everything from Christian death-metal to gospel rap, it's nice to know one can still find an album of traditional prayerful tunes. MORE THAN 50 MOST LOVED HYMNS collects popular church songs performed in a sweeping orchestral/choral style that will evoke warm memories of the grand holiday cathedral services of yesteryear.
Perhaps inspired by the sounds of angels on high, the music here is majestic in a vintage MGM film-score manner, complete ...
