(1 Customer Review)
Cat Stevens bounced back from the lackluster Numbers with an album of pop/rock songs that brought his usual rhythmic folk-rock into contemporary style with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, a snappy Dave Kershenbaum production, and lots of synthesizers. Most of the songs were unusually lightweight, but the autobiographical "(I Never Wanted) To Be a Star" explored Stevens' ambivalence about being in the music business, an attitude that would find him dropping out and finding religion after one more album. In the meantime, Izitso produced a final Top 40 hit in "(Remember the Days of The) Old Schoolyard" and a singles-chart entry in the instrumental "Was Dog a Doughnut." As a result, Stevens returned to the Top Ten LPs list with a ninth straight gold album, his last. ~ William Ruhlmann

$14.55 Blues singer Walter Brown had a vocal delivery somewhere between Rubberlegs Williams and Joe Turner. Although his alcoholism and addiction to both narcotics and amphetamines resulted in a break with Jay McShann in 1943, by 1947 Brown was back in the recording studio accompanied by the Jay McShann Quartet -- with Seeward Evans on tenor sax, bassist Percy Gabriel, and legendary Kansas City ...

Izitso CD music
$27.39 THREESOME is a limited edition and compiles the albums; DON'T ASK DON'T TELL, GOT NO STRINGS and MEXICAN STANDOFF.
In 2005, the ever-ambitious Michelle Shocked made a move that put even the most prolific artists to shame, releasing three albums of new material simultaneously. Though all three bear Shocked's unique stamp, they're all radically different from each other. Two are rather conceptual affairs; MEXICAN STANDOFF is a stylistic showdown between T-Bone Walker-style blues and rootsy Mexican music, and GOT NO STRINGS features jazzy, bluegrass-tinged covers of songs from beloved old Disney movies. DON'T ASK DON'T TELL doesn't have any grand theme, and contains the largest amount of the kind of quirky, amiable folk-rock Shocked fans have come to know and love. Taken individually, these three albums are journeys into different musical territories led by the same tour guide. However, THREESOME packages the trio together, and taking the albums as disparate parts of a whole, it becomes all the more apparent both how complex, eclectic, and adventurous Shocked can be, and how consistent her artistic vision remains. In the wake of this rush of creativity, it was ...
