| | Cat Stevens Back To Earth CD Cat Stevens Discography of CDs
Cat Stevens' final album as a pop performer (before his conversion to Islam and subsequent rejection of most of the wicked ways of the material world) is something of a return to his early '70s form. It reunites him with TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN producer Paul Samwell-Smith, and like that early classic it's gorgeously arranged, with discreet strings and a terrific command of dynamics (as in the whisper-to-a-scream "Randy"). Other highlights include the uncharacteristic "Bad Brakes," a blues-rocker that sounds like Phil Collins fronting Bad Company, the classically influenced instrumental "the Artist," and "Just Another Night," a folkie rejection song that most explicitly harkens back to Steven's classic period.
Out of print in the U.S.! Remastered reissue of the final album recorded under the name Cat Stevens, originally released in 1978. Before his conversion to Islam, Cat issued this album that may not have fared as well commercially as his early releases but was a true classic in his musical canon. Produced by Paul Samwell-Smith (who produced Tea For The Tillerman), Back To Earth is a beautifully arranged return to a more simple musical plateau that is both aurally and lyrically stimulating. 10 tracks.

Back To Earth CD music
$6.49 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Between 1970 and 1972, Cat Stevens recorded four albums in the same manner, using the same producer and many of the same musicians, painting the album covers, and assigning the records ponderous titles. Things changed with his next album, Foreigner. The recording itself had been produced by Stevens, and while a couple of Stevens' usual backup musicians had been retained, New York session musicians appeared, and second guitarist Alun Davies was gone. With him went the acoustic guitar interplay that had been the core of Stevens' sound, replaced by more elaborate keyboard-based arrangements complete with strings, brass, and a female vocal trio featuring Patti Austin. It's easy to look at the ...

Back To Earth music CDs
$7.75 Subtitled "A Pythagorean Theory Tale," Stevens' follow-up to the relatively conventional BUDDHA AND THE CHOCOLATE BOX is a semi-concept album with a sort of science fiction theme. The songs are set on the faraway planet Polygor, which "existed to give numbers to the universe," and they are sung from the point of prominent inhabitants of the planet, including the wise and deep-thinking old Novim ("Novim's Nightmare") and cranky emperor Monad ("Monad's Anthem"). The story line isn't easy to follow, but the songs ...
| | Cat Stevens Izitso CD (1977) Remastered
Back To Earth songs
$8.79 Cat Stevens bounced back from the lackluster Numbers with an album of pop/rock songs that brought his usual rhythmic folk-rock into contemporary style with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, a snappy Dave Kershenbaum production, and lots of synthesizers. Most of the songs were unusually lightweight, but the autobiographical "(I Never Wanted) To Be a Star" explored Stevens' ambivalence about being in the music business, an attitude that would find him dropping out and finding religion ...
