Though he was established as a cutting-edge jazz trumpeter and worked with such beyond-category artists as Bill Laswell and Brian Eno, Olu Dara successfully reinvented himself as a blues musician, leaning more towards pre-electric country-blues styles. NEIGHBORHOODS is aptly titled--listening to this is like taking a brief but exhilarating guided tour through Africa ("Massamba"), New Orleans ("I See The Light"), and the bluesier parts of the American South ("Herbman"). Dara is an artist who grasps the concept that various and seemingly disparate forms of music have more common ground than most people realize, and he communicates these "common grounds" with warmth and style.

(vocals, slide guitar, 12-string dobro); Derek Trucks, Bob Margolin (acoustic & electric guitars); Tab Benoit (acoustic guitar); Corey Harris, John Mooney (slide guitar); John Cleary (piano); Bob Sunda (acoustic & electric basses); Herman Ernest III (drums).
Junior Wells' penchant for clowning around sometimes conflicts with his craftsmanship, but he's all business on Come on in This House, his most unadulterated blues record since his highly acclaimed Hoodoo Man Blues of more than 30 years vintage. This is what has come to be known as an "unplugged" session -- that is, predominately, although not exclusively, acoustic instrumentation. Producer John Snyder's concept was threefold: to team Wells with some of the era's top ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Eat A Peach CD (1972) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
Neighborhoods CD music
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Released shortly after the death of guitar legend Duane Allman, EAT A PEACH occupies an important transitional spot in the Allman Brothers' discography. The leading three tracks, recorded after Duane's death, point the way toward the band's future. While still rooted in the group's blues-jam roots, these songs show the Allmans angling closer to the melodic country style ...
| | Black Sabbath Mob Rules CD (1981) Import; Remastered
Neighborhoods music CDs
$12.79 Black Sabbath had put itself back on track both musically and commercially with the 1980 album HEAVEN AND HELL, as the addition of new vocalist Ronnie James Dio was the shot in the arm Sabbath needed. A follow-up was released one year later, MOB RULES, which follows in the same mega-decibel approach as its predecessor. While it is still a vast improvement over Sabbath's final two albums with Ozzy Osbourne (1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE), it doesn't exactly match the inspired performances and top compositions featured on HEAVEN AND HELL.
The opening track, "Turn Up the Night," kicks off the album with a jolt of electricity, while other hard rocking highlights include the mid-paced "Voodoo" and the raging ...

| | Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) Remastered
Neighborhoods music CDs
$24.79 Generally regarded as Elton John's masterpiece, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is a double-album (on one CD) that includes several of his signature songs alongside a sprawling array of lesser-known (but by no means lesser) tunes. The hits included "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto stomper; the Rolling Stonesy rocker "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"; and the gorgeous title ballad. "Candle In The Wind," an elegy for Marilyn Monroe, which didn't become a certified hit until 14 years later, when John re-recorded it with the Melbourne Symphony. The fact that it wasn't released as a single at the time is testimony to the wealth of pop pleasures available here.
The swelling, synth-fueled overture of "Funeral For A Friend" gives way to one of John's toughest guitar-rockers in an 11-minute medley. "Grey Seal" is a piano showcase with a perfect verse-chorus-verse construction. The ...
