Swan - Works For Cello And Orchestra / Han-Na Chang
$6.09 In 1975, Reuniting with longtime producer Bob Ezrin (who was absent for Cooper's prior record, MUSCLE OF LOVE), Cooper released an album whose title explains the subject matter--WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. Now on his own and in total control, Cooper was able to explore rock theatrics in a way that was impossible in his band. The ensuing tour was one of the most over-the-top excursions of that era.
"Cold Ethyl" is a disturbing little ditty about necrophilia. The soft, melodic "Only Women Bleed" became a surprise smash for Alice, and there's a low-key feel as well on the chilling "Steven." The somewhat funky title track works as a kind of theme song, while Cooper's expected heavy metal tendencies are explored on "The Black Widow." Most of Lou Reed's band joined Cooper for this record. Guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, as well as bassist Prakash John do a superb job of replicating the excitement of the original band.
After the band known as Alice Cooper broke up, the band's singer/namesake took the moniker on for his first solo album. In 1975, Reuniting with longtime producer Bob Ezrin (who was absent for Cooper's prior record, MUSCLE OF LOVE), Cooper released an album whose title says it all--WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. | | Misfits Walk Among Us CD (1982)
Swan - Works For Cello And Orchestra / Han-Na Chang
$8.99 If the Misfits were one of the greatest punk bands then WALK AMONG US s perhaps one of the greatest records in punk history. While STATIC AGE and EARTH A.D. showcased a band searching for an identity like a vampire for its next victim, WALK AMONG US is almost sheer perfection. With a solidified lineup, fully grown-out devillocks (the Misfits trademark long spike of hair in the front) and the stabilizing presence of the somewhat pedestrian but agile Arthur Googy on drums, uber-Misfit Glenn Danzig was finally able to match his zombie-Elvis to a worthy musical foil.
From the manic opening of "20 Eyes" to the monster football chorus of "Braineaters," there is nothing less than a sublime moment on this album from start to finish. "Astro Zombies" or "I Turned Into a Martian" sound like songs to raise the dead by. A special bonus is perhaps the tenderest love song to decapitation ("Skulls") in recent memory. Finally back in print after years of being a collector's item, WALK AMONG US is a classic of any genre and a must-have for any serious punk fan.

| | Mark Knopfler One Take Radio Sessions CD (2005) Extended Play
Swan - Works For Cello And Orchestra / Han-Na Chang
$6.15 As guitar gods go, Mark Knopfler is a guy whose mellow music-making approach is at odds with the over-the-top images generally associated with the aforementioned tag. That notwithstanding, Knopfler demonstrates on LIVE FROM SHANGRI-LA that his kind of subtle instrumental skill and deft wielding of musical textures make any kind of six-string histrionics moot. Drawing the bulk of material from this set's 2004 studio predecessor SHANGRI-LA means there's a rich trove of storytelling fare for Knopfler and his compatriots to trot out. "Boom, Like That," a nod to Ray Kroc sung in the McDonald's founder's voice, benefits from a snappy reading while "Donegan's Gone," Knopfler's homage to his skiffle idol, has a twangy charm that points at the influence of Chet Atkins as much as it does of Donegan. And like Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon, the Scottish string-bender has his own song about a boxer in the shape of the fuzz-guitar blues of "Song for Sonny Liston." The only deviation from the all-SHANGRI-LA track list is "Rudiger," a song from Knopfler's first solo album with a moody nuance and understated guitar playing that hearkens back to the Dire Straits founder's LOVE OVER GOLD days.
Recording information: Shangri-la Studios, Malibu, CA.
Personnel: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Mark Knopfler; Doug Pettibone (electric guitar, mandolin); Glenn Worf (bass guitar); Richard Bennett (guitar); Jim Cox, Matt Rollings (keyboards); Chad Cromwell (drums).
