| | Very Best Of Burt Bacharach CD (2001)
Rubinstein Collection Vol 58 -Beethoven: Piano Concertos
$7.95 A handy single-disc consolidation of the three-disc box set THE LOOK OF LOVE, THE VERY BEST OF BURT BACHARACH drops the rarities and oddities for a 16-track blast of nothing but the biggest hits, over a third of which are sung by Bacharach and Hal David's premier vocal partner, Dionne Warwick. Other singers include Gene Pitney, the Shirelles, Dusty Springfield, and Christopher Cross, all of them performing some of the finest songs of their careers. Best of all for the most easy-listening-averse fans--none of the songs come from Bacharach's 1960s and '70s albums for A&M Records, on which it's made clear that the best songwriters are not always the best singers. Only the lack of Warwick's "Promises, Promises," perhaps the trio's most exemplary work together, keeps THE VERY BEST OF BURT BACHARACH from being perfect.
Includes liner notes by Patrick Milligan & Alec Cumming.

$7.75 | | Best Tango Album In The World, Ever! CDs (2003)
Rubinstein Collection Vol 58 -Beethoven: Piano Concertos
$12.39 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little less than an hour and a half, does feature some major performers of the music, notably Carlos Gardel, renowned as the father of the tango, heard performing "Volver" and the concluding vocal version of "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and Astor Piazzolla, who used the tango as a vehicle for composing modern classical music, heard performing "La Rayuela." Other notable performers include Carlos Garcia & His Orchestra, heard on four tracks, Sexteto Mayor, Florindo Sassone & His Traditional Orchestra, and Alfredo de Angelis & His Traditional Orchestra. (If the casual listener to whom this collection is intended recognizes the third track, "Por una Cabeza," that's because it has turned up in the film Scent of a Woman, as the music to which Al Pacino's blind character dances, as well as in the opening scene of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film True Lies.) This is not a scholarly collection, being devoid of annotations beyond the requisite song titles, artists, and songwriting credits. But it plays well, and ...

$13.99 Contains soundtrack music from the films THE PORT OF LAST RESORT and LATIN BOYS GO TO HELL.
Saxophonist and composer John Zorn has a hand in so many different and contrasting musical ventures that it's hard to keep track of them all. From the Klezmer-meets-Ornette Coleman sound of his Masada quartet to classical compositions for orchestra to a caustic fusion of improvised jazz and heavy metal, the only constants in Zorn's approach are diversity and integrity. This volume of FILMWORKS features soundtrack music from two very different films. The first is PORT OF LAST RESORT, a documentary about the 1930s Jewish refugees who, fleeing Nazi persecution, resettled in the Shanghai province of China. Zorn's music for this film consists of beautiful, wistful miniatures that delicately combine elements of Klezmer, Chinese folk music, and American film noir music, scored for violin, electric guitar, pipa (a Chinese lute), cello and acoustic bass. The second soundtrack is from LATIN BOYS GO TO HELL, and is a collection of short pieces written for two master percussionists. These are alternately shimmering, ghostly mood pieces and sultry, pulsating tapestries of rhythm. This disc presents Zorn's craft at its most accessible, yet remains uncompromising.
Composer: John Zorn.
Personnel: Greg Cohen (double bass); Marc Ribot (guitar); Min Xiao-Fen (pipa); Mark Feldman (violin); Erik Friedlander (cello); Anthony Coleman (piano); Kenny Wollesen (vibraphone, drums, percussion); Cyro Baptista (percussion).

Rubinstein Collection Vol 58 -Beethoven: Piano Concertos
$13.15 DANN GLENNSymphony No. 1 BibliaThis is the first in a series of six symphonic works created by composer Dann Glenn over the past few years, which are now being released. A completely tonal virtual orchestral piece, Symphony No. 1 is an exceptional aural illustration of Glenn's respect for the timeless religious works by the great composers from the 18th Century; including Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Brucker, and Mahler.Glenn's use of choir and tubular orchestral bells helps celebrate the daunting, age-old subject of communal with ones higher power. A valuable work by an earnest composer, Symphony No. 1 gives the listener a beautiful voyage into the past, while also leaving them with an optimism for the future. Not only for the ears, but also for the spirit, Symphony No.1 is an engaging experience, for all who love great music.Apart, each of his six symphonies stand on their own merit, both in compositional technique and approach as unique works of art. Though there are some vast differences between this first symphony and his next five, they are all still interconnected and interdependent. Maestro Glenn adheres to strict classical protocols with Symphony No.1, whereas with all of his following works, ...
