Unlike many of the tributes compiled by Vitamin Records, Flammable doesn't rely on one single style of emulation (for example, chamber music). Instead, the ten artists enlisted perform a cross section of Red Hot Chili Peppers' material, which ranges stylistically from the straight-up boring electro of George Sarah's "Me and My Friends," which uses exactly none of the original song, to the charming twee pop of Gringo Floyd's take on "Scar Tissue." In between there's hot punk, cool funk, and even some hip-hop. Which was a good plan by Vitamin, as the styles above all co-exist inside the belly of the beast that is RHCP. The yowling punk rock of the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs' "Catholic School Girls Rule" is a standout, as is Capsule's even sexier "Sexy Mexican Maid." The latter features female vocals and samples taken from the actual Chili Peppers version. Owl's version of "Behind the Sun" is appropriately trippy, and even replicates Flea's dominating bassline with aplomb. Flammable won't win any awards for consistency, but it's an interesting look into how disparate the Chili Peppers' own influences were. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Katatonia Night Is The New Day CD (2009)
Flammable: Tribute To The Red Hot Chili Peppers CD music
$14.38 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has ...

$15.85 The superlative repackaging and remastering undertaken by Ryko has put the original three-part, two-record set of this magnificent nonsense tale together for the first time. This is back to the madness of Freak Out, with more pop and doo-wop bursting through all the complicated stuff, letting you know that Zappa could write a hit single, if he could be bothered to do ...

| | Caifanes El Silencio CD (1992)
Flammable: Tribute To The Red Hot Chili Peppers music CDs
$7.79 Having Adrian Belew produce a Caifanes album must have seemed like a great idea, since the Mexican band had a musical attack as accomplished and eclectic as Belew's own work. Unfortunately, the pairing just doesn't strike sparks here. Belew's influence shows up throughout the album, which has more jittery rhythms and odd dissonances than other albums by the band. This works fine on a few cuts, such as the lively "Nubes," but over the course of the album it is a distraction. That sense of musical clutter may also be due to the attempted expansion of the band -- Caifanes ...
