Anthony Hopkins, Peter O'Toole, Timothy Dalton, Katharine Hepburn, Nigel Terry, John Castle, Jane Merrow - Dir:Anthony Harvey Adapted from the James Goldman play, the extraordinary story of the 12th century King of England, and first of the Plantagenets, Henry II and his love/hate, combative relationships with his imprisoned, estranged Queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine and their three surviving sons, Richard (the Lionhearted), Geoffrey, and John (who was later, as king, forced to sign the Magna Carta). The entire story takes place during the Christmas season of 1183 at the Castle of Chinon, in Henry's 50th year. A decision on whom of the three princes is best suited capable to succeed him on the throne when he dies, and keep together his empire, becomes of prime importance, in an amazing and intriguing battle of wills, wit, and words between Henry and Eleanor. Set over Christmas of 1183, this classic royal costume dramas concerns Henry II's effort to choose a worthy successor. Powerful Henry II (Peter O'Toole) favors his youngest son John (Nigel Terry), while his strong-willed wife Eleanor (Katherine Hepburn) feels the honor should be bestowed upon eldest son Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins, in his screen debut). This disagreement leads the family to a war of wills that will stress every bond of love, trust, and honor. This acclaimed adaptation of James Goldman's play was also the first film for Timothy Dalton. Academy Award Nominations: 7, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor--Peter O'Toole. Academy Awards: 3, including Best (Adapted) Screenplay, Best Actress--Katharine Hepburn (shared with Barbra Streisand - "Funny Girl"). Shot in Eastmancolor and Panavision.
Screen debuts for both Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins and British actor Timothy Dalton. Lion In Winter Reviews: "...It's more fun than ever seeing Peter O'Toole trading verbal venom with Katherine Hepburn..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...[With] barbed dialogue, sharp characterisations and Machiavellian intrigues..."
-- Paul Roland, Total Film 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he combination of James Goldman's sharp script and icily perfect performances from an obscenely talented cast make this a gripping historical thriller."-- Helen O'Hara, Empire

Lion In Winter DVD
$10.29 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips ...

$10.49 The fractious relationship between director Paul Morrissey (known for his work on Andy Warhol's FLESH, TRASH and HEAT) and his two stars--Brit comedians Peter Cook (from the 1967 version of BEDAZZLED) and Dudley Moore (ARTHUR)--threatened to usurp this satirical poke at the SHERLOCK HOLMES books. But fortunately the end results more than justify the somewhat shaky atmosphere ...
| | Final Cut DVD (2004) Widescreen; Subtitled
Lion In Winter video
$6.95 Omar Naim's futuristic science-fiction story generates many mysterious, alluring, and thought-provoking questions about memory, surveillance, and the ethics of personal privacy. Set in the future, THE FINAL CUT offers a vision of a world where soon-to-be parents agree to let doctors surgically implant memory chips into the brains of their unborn children. These memory chips are like video cameras with infinite tape stock that comprehensively record the lives of their hosts through the hosts' own eyes--for better or for worse. When a host dies, a "cutter"--played here by an eerily introspective Robin Williams--receives the memory chip footage from the deceased person's family in order to edit the memories for a palatable funereal screening, called a "rememory." But are memories public or private? Is it fair for a cutter to decide what comprises a host's life story? And do people behave differently knowing that someone will view their lives, even their most intimate and discreet moments, as a short film? THE FINAL CUT's use of sharp and furtive handheld camera footage to depict the perspective of memory, set in contrast with the evenly measured cinematography of the rest of the film, constantly foregrounds the medium of film as memory-capturing and memory-making device. ...

$10.29 Director Mike Nichols's THE GRADUATE is the satirical coming-of-age comedy that became an emotional touchstone for an entire generation. In the mid-1960s, Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a confused college graduate, is pulled in myriad directions by family, friends, and associates just days after receiving his degree. Seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), an older friend of the family, Ben carries on an affair with the married woman even as he falls for her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross). However, Ben and Elaine's attempts at romance are threatened by the spiteful rage ...
