In a dry, parched canyon located in the southwest, a rich rancher battles it out with a poor counterpart for water rights. Yet in fact, neither man has control of the precious liquid. It really belongs to Julie Maragon, and she generously allows them both to use it. But when a cultured Easterner arrives with plans to marry the wealthy rancher's daughter, his presence sparks a fresh round of anger and resentment. Wyler's powerful Western covers a lot of territory with Gregory Peck a fish out of water as a sea captain who travels west to marry and settle, but finds himself in the middle of a bitter dispute over water rights and a jealous clash with the ranch foreman (Charlton Heston). He also discovers his fiancee isn't who he imagined and finds true romance with the local schoolmistress (Jean Simmons). Folk singer Burl Ives surprised audiences with his performance which garnered him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Big Country Movie Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars)  More than just a Western
This movie, although set in the west, and has shoot-em action, could be a story told in a lot of different settings. This is the story about a man,(our hero, played by Gregory Peck) who is confident in himself. He does not have to prove himself to any one. If he does have to prove himself, it is to himself he must prove. This is rare today in the people portrayed in movies and in life. There is no ego trip here, or a bunch of he-man pride getting in the way. This is a gentle-man who is confident in himself and knows what he is capable of. He does not get angry when he is insulted, and does not have to get even. To make it more modern, if anyone had an excuse to have road rage, he does, but yet he is much more civilized and rises above the problem. Alas, our hero has so many fine qualities that are lacking today. A must for anyone who desires a primer for a better way to act.

A film not very many people talk about or maybe not even heard about.great performances from Peck and Ives.If you are into westerns this is one for your collection.This is up there with the greats.

One Of The Best Westerns Of All Time!!!
If you want to watch a GREAT WESTERN, then this is one to see. It has a great story, that will keep you glue to your TV & a great all-star cast. Starring Gregory Peck as the Captian, Carrol Baker as his fiance, Jean Simmons as Baker's best friend & Burl Ives (in his Oscar-winning role). Also starring Charlton Heston, Charles Brickford, Chuck Connors & Alfonso Bedoya. If you order this movie, you won't be sorry that you did. To me ... one of the BEST WESTERNS of all time.
