Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Soundtrack Spanish In this wonderful spoof of Western films, a sharpshooting drifter wanders into a lawless mining town and takes the thankless job of sheriff.
Director Burt Kennedy's Western is a bawdy, all-out parody that skewers every cliché the genre has to offer. There's Jason McCullough (James Garner), the sharpshooting stranger passing through town who becomes sheriff; the Danbys, a villainous gang who terrorizes the entire community; Prudy Perkins (Joan Hackett), the lily white maiden who wants to marry the sheriff; and the local drunk (the great Jack Elam) whom McCullough appoints as his deputy. Although McCullough manages to arrest Joe Danby (Bruce Dern), the rest of the Danby gang is set on busting him out of prison. Garner is utterly charming as the earnest hero of this entertaining tale, cool and calm as a cucumber; don't miss the scene in which he first imprisons Joe Danby in a cell without bars. Support Your Local Sheriff Movie Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) James Garner at his best. I suppose the whole cast is stellar and their performance is fantastic. From the crusty Walter Brennan, Harry morgan, Jack Elam... a winner throughout. My vcr tape broke and now I have a much better venue in the dvd.

Funny, Quirky, Great Role for Garner! This is such a funny, family movie. The scene where Garner has put Bruce Dern into a jail cell with no bars, only lines painted on the floor and Walter Brennan finds it unbelievable that he hasn't escaped is one of the funniest movie moments I have ever seen. Just a crackup. This movie, along with "Support Your Local Gunfighter" are family favorites. Submitted by grammalinda1 (Cobb Mountain, CA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Law and Laughter in the Wild West James Garner leads a solid cast in this wacky western about a man taking a temporary job as sheriff while on his way to Australia. Side kick Jack Elam helps Garner tame the nasty Danbe family that rule the town. Never a dull moment this picture is good family viewing. Dynamite Cast Spoofs All The Problems of the Wild West Before commanding the 4077th M*A*S*H, Harry Morgan was Ollie Perkins, Mayor of Calendar, Colorado, a wide open mining town in need of law and order if ever there was one. Stray dogs meandering through a boot hill barrian’, distract the Mayor’s loopy daughter Prudy (Joan Hackett) to the twinkling of gold in the open grave. About this time, meandering through life (ultimate destination: Australia) just following his nose toward a hot lunch, glib and wily Jason McCullough (James Garner), happens into town. The ensuing nonstop collection of overlapping antics and outrageous subplots is totally captivating, preposterously ridiculous, and ridiculously hilarious.
Jim Garner was just warming up to play this part in his previous life as Bret Maverick, and it isn’t long before the cleverly lazy Jason McCullough (focused mostly on prospecting for gold) spots a “help wanted” sign. Next thing ya’ know he demonstrates his knowledge of the nuts and bolts of law enforcement in hardware department of the mayor’s general store, and instantly qualifies for the frequently vacant position of town Sheriff. Garner’s ability to say more with one expression than many do with a handful of lines fills every second with the kind of gold the producers can take to the assay office.
Jack Elam glows as Jake, Garner’s derelict turned deputy sidekick, in the war against the bad guys led by Pa Danby (Walter Brennan). One liners abound as a green yet confident sheriff packs this film full of educational sequences like how to keep Joe Danby (Bruce Dern), the territory’s second toughest desperado, in a jail with no bars, how to disarm the hostile Pa Danby (who already has the drop on him) without leaving the comfort of his chair, and brief combination gold mining and fishing lesson, and several more. There’s even a brief session on how to put the town’s prostitutes out of business with a boom instead of a bang (no pun intended).
A half dozen or so additional well known faces all combine to magically conjure up lots of mud in your mouth or is it trail dust in your eyes. Then their’s the familiar fragrance of sweaty leather up your nose, with those somewhat predictable situations (rampant inflation, a totally infatuated female, a constant stream of gunslingers, etc.), and frequent clouds of cordite breeze by to reveal
some very unpredictable yet hilariously successful solutions.
I wonder if maybe the subtitle technician actually did head for Australia. The absence of English subtitles and/or closed captioning becomes a significant error of omission, since the audio level on this dvd changes from scene to scene. Keep the remote handy to adjust the volume.
I predict; once you’ve seen “Support Your Local Sheriff,” you won’t be able to look at a tin star, a mud puddle, or a dogwood tree with a straight face any time soon! Submitted by jon282 (Sacramento, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
