Papa John DeFrancesco, the father of organist/trumpeter Joey DeFrancesco and guitarist John DeFrancesco II, is an excellent organist in the style of Jimmy Smith. He did not begin to emerge on records until the 1990s, but has made up for lost time through his High Note recordings. This particular set has plenty of blues (including Lalo Schifrin's "The Cat," "Freddy the Freeloader," "Back at the Chicken Shack," and "Hip Cake Walk") along with a few standards and basic chord changes. DeFrancesco, whose two sons are on some of the selections (with Joey on trumpet) is the main voice throughout. The supporting cast includes the fine if obscure tenor saxophonist Bootsie Barnes. A fun session that is easily recommended to fans of the swinging and bluesy jazz organ. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (6/01, p.120) - "...This family affair is compatible and easy-going..." Hip Cake Walk
$9.45 Personnel: Nina Simone (vocals, piano); Al Shackman (guitar); Chris White (bass); Rob Hamilton (drums). Recorded live at the Village Gate, New York, New York in 1961. Includes liner notes by Billy Vera. Personnel includes: Nina Simone (vocals); Al Shackman (guitar); Chris White (bass); Bobby Hamilton (drums). Recorded at The Village Gate, New York, New York. Personnel: Nina Simone (vocals, piano); Al Shackman (guitar); Rob Hamilton (drums). Liner Note Author: Billy Vera. Recording information: Village Gate, New York, NY (1961). Unknown Contributor Role: Chris White . Nina Simone has the rare ability of really being able to dig into material and bring out unexpected meaning in familiar lyrics. On "Just in Time" from this CD reissue, she gives one the impression that if she had not been found "Just in Time," she would have committed suicide. During "He Was Too Good to Me," Simone sounds absolutely stunned about the end of a love affair. "Brown Baby" is both hopeful and defiant in its call for freedom, while "Zungo" is an African work song. Also from her 1961 trio performance at the Village Gate, Simone performs the overly serious "If He Changed My Name," the good-time gospel piece "Children Go Where I Send You," a regretful rendition of "House of the Rising Sun," and an unpredictable instrumental version of "Bye Bye Blackbird." Nina Simone, who was always in a category by herself, is heard throughout in her early prime. ~ Scott Yanow AT THE VILLAGE GATE captures the legendary Nina Simone live with her fine trio in 1961, still early in her career, at New York City's intimate Village Gate club. Simone is a musical anomaly, and her music can be very hard to categorize. She is a classically trained pianist. At times her complex piano parts call to mind Bach ("Bye Bye Blackbird"). She is a folk singer-witness her biting version of "The House of the Rising Sun." She is a gospel singer, as heard in GATE's roof-raising version of "Children Go Where I Send You." She is a jazz singer, with a finger-poppin' and shuffling version of "Just inTime." She's also a protest singer and a powerful actress capable of manipulating our fiercest emotions through song. Simone is all these things. Moreover, she understands that only the music matters-whatever form it may take. Like smoke, her music constantly shifts shapes. Simone's eclecticism makes her a perfect artist for any time. This legendary concert document will always sound fresh and original, just as it did the night it was recorded, ...
