This DVD showcases several top female vocalists in musical shorts. Features Ethel Merman, Ruth Etting, Lillian Roth, Ginger Rogers and others. Also includes Cary Grant making his final debut as a sailor crusing the Far East in search of whoopee in Singapore Sue. Includes "Blue of the Night," "Musical Doctor," "Office Blues," "Meet the Boyfriend," "Her Future" and more! A collection of shorts from the early days of sound films, this edition of HOLLYWOOD RHYTHYM presents shorts from performers who, like Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers, would become legends later in their career. Additionally, because many of these shorts were made before the Production Code was enforced in 1934, these film are both racy and sometimes fairly bizarre. Ethel Merman stars in one of the more surreal shorts, "Her Future," in which she defends her life before a judge and performs two musical numbers. Also of note is the presence of "Singapore Sue," in which Cary Grant makes his first film appearance. A delightful collection of early musical shorts from some of Hollywood's greatest performers, these films are priceless for their glimpse of the stars before they were stars as well as for some unforgettable musical moments. Hollywood Rhythm Vol. 2: The Best Of Big Band & Swing DVD
$14.45 Directed by John Huston, THE ASPHALT JUNGLE is considered by many to be the defining film of the crime oeuvre. After many years in prison, Doc (Sam Jaffe), a seemingly over-the-hill and retired (i.e. rehabilitated) criminal decides upon his release to make one last go of it. His attempts at reuniting the old gang come up against the intentions of his partner who intends to start a Kentucky horse farm with his share of the take. Doc's lecherous tendencies ...

Hollywood Rhythm Vol. 2: The Best Of Big Band & Swing movie DVD
$14.49 Eternal icon of cool Robert Mitchum is at his sad-eyed, world-weary finest in OUT OF THE PAST (aka BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH), one of the true classics of postwar American film noir. Mitchum stars as existential antihero Jeff Markham, a retired private detective with a shady past who is hoping for a fresh start with a new name, a new love, and a new job running a small gas station in a rural California town. But Jeff's past comes back to haunt him in the guise of menacing gangster Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas, in only his second big screen role), who had hired Markham to track down his double-crossing moll, Kathie (Jane Greer, in definitive femme-fatale mode), after she had shot him and absconded with $40,000 of his money. The trio's entangled history is revealed via flashback and voice-over narration that includes some of the snappiest dialogue ...

Hollywood Rhythm Vol. 2: The Best Of Big Band & Swing video
$14.95 This unusual and worthwhile black-and-white film noir was one of the first movies to deal with issues of anti-Semitism. A weary Washington detective (Robert Young) must get to the bottom of a seemingly motive-lacking murder, with the prime suspect a boozy soldier who can only vaguely recall the events of the night. The story really digs its heels into lots of postwar issues--how soldiers ...
