Once upon a time, wedding celebrations, family gatherings, and dances required the presence of musicians to make the celebration complete. After all, people in the country loved to dance long before dancehalls and the goosestep made dancing trendy. Recorded between 1959 and 1962, English Country Music features fiddler and mandolin/banjo player Walter Bulwer, dulcimer player Billy Cooper, and pianist Daisy Bulwer on a variety of waltzes, polkas, and jigs. The joy of these recordings comes from listening to the interaction among the musicians, and listening to them cut loose on old favorites like "The Four-Hand Reel" and "Soldier's Joy." Certain cuts like "The Sailor's Hornpipe," "Jenny Lind," and "The Foggy Dew" will stand out as familiar. "Shave the Donkey" and "Off She Goes" appear twice, first by a solo fiddle player, then by the full band. For listeners accustomed to Appalachian-styled instrumental music, the piano and melodeon add a distinctive flavor to this traditionally styled music. Melodeon player Reg Hall has written extensive liner notes, providing in-depth background and enriching the whole project. This is a superior collection that captures these musicians in their natural element and in good form. The recording is also a testament to traditional music enthusiasts like Mervyn Plunkett, who was active in bringing these players together. For the old-fashioned, this disc will also suffice -- in a pinch -- as a fine substitute for a dance band at one's next celebration. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
Billy Cooper (1883), Walter Bulwer (1888) & Daisy Bulwer (1892) were active musicians in rural Norfolk for over half a century. These recordings, made together with visiting friends in the Bulwers' cottage in the village of Shipdham, capture the style, v

English Country Music album
$9.79 Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, cut in October 1956, only four months after its predecessor, came about under slightly less favorable circumstances than the Bluejean Bop album. Cliff Gallup, whose lead guitar had been so central to the group's original sound, and rhythm guitarist Willie Williams, who was only somewhat less important to their sound, had been gone from the band for nearly two months when producer Ken Nelson decided it was time to cut material for more singles and a second album. Gallup was persuaded to rejoin temporarily for the sessions that yielded this album, and with him he brought not only a hot-sounding ...

$17.75 AT THE AGE OF 8 YEARS OLD, GOD BLESSED ME TO PLAY THE ORGAN. AT THIS AGE SO MANY PEOPLE WERE SHOCKED TO SEE A LITTLE BOY WHOSE FEET COULDN'T TOUCH THE PEDALS ON THE ORGAN, PLAYING FOR YOUTH CHOIRS IN THE MARYLAND AREA. IT WAS AN EVEN BIGGER SHOCK TO KNOW THAT I NEVER HAD LESSONS TO PLAY. JUST BY THE FAVOR OF GOD. I WAS MOST INFLUENCED BY THE LATE PROFESSOR ALFRED BOLDEN OF L.A. CALIFORNIA. I ALSO HAD THE OPPURTUNITY TO PLAY ON THE SAME STAGE WITH MANY PIONEERS OF GOSPEL MUSIC SUCH AS SHIRLEY CEASAR, WALTER HAWKINS, AND THE O'NEAL TWINS. THE FAVOR OF GOD WAS ON ME. ALL I CAN SAY IS, WHAT AN AWESOME FAVOR. AS I BECAME OLDER, MORE ARTISTS BECAME OF INTEREST TO ME, SUCH AS ANDRE CROUCH, THE WINANS, JOHN P. KEE, AND MY ALL TIME FAVORITE RANCE ALLEN. THE LORD BEGAN TO TAKE ME TO ANOTHER LEVEL AND THAT IS WHEN GOD PUT SONGS IN ME. I BEGAN TO WRITE SONGS. WITH MY PARENTS BEHIND ME, IT KEPT ME LEVEL. I'M ALSO A PK KID. THANK GOD FOR HAVING SAVED PARENTS. GOD HAS TRUELY BLESSED ME WITH AN EAR TO HEAR , AND NOW A VOICE TO DO ...

The band is still performing today as Papa Doo Run Run. In 1994 Steve joined with long time friend and studio musician Dave Kibler to form Sound Bytes. Dave began performing ...
| | Eliza Lynn Haven CD (2009)
English Country Music CD music
$18.99 When Eliza Lynn tosses her long red hair back and steps up to the microphone to sing, a world of music comes pouring out. Foothills folk, backwoods hollers, playful pop, lilting Texas Swing and deep country blues; over the course of her young-but-well-traveled life, the Nashville and Asheville based singer/songwriter has absorbed it all, and with the release of Haven, her career-defining third full-length collection, Lynn succeeds in integrating those freewheeling influences into a compelling and seamless musical whole. Working with Nashville producer/guitarist Thomm Jutz [Nanci Griffith, Mary Gauthier], and a core group of Music City's finest players (including Griffith drummer Pat McInerney and longtime Ricky Skaggs bassist Mark Fain), Lynn hits a deeply traditional vein only hinted at on her two previous critically acclaimed releases, 2005's Frisky Or Fair and The Weary Wake Up from 2007. It was "Sing A New Song," a track from her debut album, that helped to spread the singer's reputation beyond her loyal Asheville fan base and kicked off the chain of events that would lead up to the making of Haven. Citing Lynn's "enormous talent," Putumayo World Music featured the song ...
