Seasoned veteran jazz guitarist Wilkins performs in a mixture of settings, including a dynamite duet with his old time buddy, guitarist Jimmy Bruno, together for the first time on CD. The album also features Wilkins playing solo, trio settings with new B
Personnel: Jack Wilkins, Jimmy Bruno (guitar); Phil France (bass); Patrick Illingworth (drums). Personnel: Jack Wilkins (guitar); Jimmy Bruno (guitar). Audio Mixer: Paul Gilchrist. Liner Note Author: Chris Burden. Recording information: Crimson 2 Studios, Sale, Cheshire, England (06/13/2000). The U.K.'s String Jazz caught Jack Wilkins and Jimmy Bruno in England at the same time and decided to record them under the mantle of a quartet led by Wilkins. That's misleading because Bruno is as prominent as Wilkins, and the settings range from solo performances to quartet. Whatever, the outcome is an album to be enjoyed by jazz guitar fans in particular and jazz lovers in general. This is not the only time these two have performed together. In 1997, they were together at the Benedetto Concert on Long Island, NY, named in honor of master guitar builder Robert Benedetto. The synergy they developed then is even more highly honed here. "Voyage" is high-energy stuff with Patrick Illingworth's drums calling the shots on rhythm. Wilkins' clean guitar lines contrast with Bruno's fondness for chords and octave playing as the latter's adherence to the big-toned electric tradition is evident here and elsewhere. This burner is tempered by cooler playing on such sweeter cuts as "Give Me the Simple Life," where this time Bruno kicks off the melody with Wilkins taking a later chorus with matters concluding with friendly chord trading. One of the more startling cuts on the album, "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," starts off as if it were from the pen of Telemann, Vivaldi, or some other Baroque composer, before seguing into a medium tempo where each shows dazzling technique and speed. There are times on this cut where one wonders whether a third guitarist was snuck into the studio. Their respective bop upbringing come to the fore in Denzil Best's classic "Move." This album captures two veteran jazz guitarists at the top of their form, both completely confident of their mastery of the instrument and the music they have chosen to play on it. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan

$16.39 Jack JezzroDIVERSITY best describes the artistry of guitarist, bassist, and producer Jack Jezzro. His numerous recordings and productions have sold well into the millions, all while continuing to be a highly regarded studio musician and performer with an extensive resume. However, even more than that, Jezzro has a style and taste that are all his own—qualities that are a breath of fresh air to the music of today and qualities that breathe new life into the music of yesterday. ::: The Early YearsJazz is a natural expression for this West Virginia native, who seems to have been born musical. Jack Jezzro grew up in the small town of Rivesville, starting on piano and accordion when he was very young. “I would go to the piano and start banging out tunes when I was four or five,” he recalls. His remarkable skill at simultaneously fingering melody and chord changes came naturally to him as a young listener. “I had a stack of Chet Atkins records, and that’s how I learned to play,” Jezzro reports. “As a kid, I’d want to play all the parts. I’d listen to a tune by James Taylor, The Doobie Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, or whomever. I’d play the bass part, the piano, the vocal—and I’d want to do it all right there on the guitar.”::: EducationFor his bass-playing skills, Jezzro earned a scholarship to West Virginia University in nearby Morgantown. “I still kept playing guitar, but they didn’t have a guitar program,” he says. “I wanted to go to school there because it was close by, so I picked the ...
