Eyesinweasel is the new project of former Guided By Voices guitarist Tobin Sprout and though the group's debut release, Wrinkled Thoughts, contains some of GBV's rugged indie pop sensibilities, it has more in common with Sprout's post-GBV solo releases, such as 1996's Carnival Boy and 1999's Let's Welcome the Circus People. In those efforts, Sprout kept his old band's keen knack for melody and songcraft but also added a greater care to the recording process. Wrinkled Thoughts continues Sprout's diligence in the studio (even if it's only an eight-track one) and contains theremin, harpsichord, piano, and, on songs such as "Slow Flanges," a delicacy that would've been completely out of place in GBV. That's not to say Sprout has gone Top 40, though. The lyrics are still skewed as hell ("a hundred monkey theory/an internet to the weary") and the album still has plenty of noise rock workouts such as "Hint #9," but overall it is a much more realized and mature record and the listener only benefits. ~ Steve Kurutz

| | Klezmatics Wonder Wheel CD (2006)
Wrinkled Thoughts music CDs
$14.19 Like Billy Bragg and Wilco's MERMAID AVENUE, the Klezmatics' WONDER WHEEL comes out of the lyrics of the late folk troubadour Woody Guthrie. An agreement between the band and Woody's daughter, Nora Guthrie, allowed the Klezmatics to use previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics as a complement to their Eastern European-steeped sound. Though the band has made a career playing variations on traditional Jewish music, WONDER WHEEL incorporates diverse musical influences (including Celtic vocals from Susan McKeown), stretching the band's aesthetic while giving Guthrie's political and cultural concerns a fresh context.
“While the trip along Mermaid’s Avenue is off the beaten Klezmatics path, it's a welcome diversion.”- Billboard Magazine“New York six-piece celebrate their 20th year as a band, show that clarinets can rock.”- Blender Magazine“The Klezmatics are wonderful!”- Pete SeegerThe story of Wonder Wheel is a glorious tale of happenstance and discovery, populated by luminaries from different worlds and different eras. In the pantheon: American folk icon Woody Guthrie and world music superstars the Klezmatics, Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie, maestro Itzhak Perlman—whose chance meeting with Nora helped plant ...
