Freedom Call: Chris Bay (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sascha Gerstner (guitar); Ilker Ersin (bass); Dan Zimmermann (drums). Additional personnel: Mitch Schmitt (vocals); Ferdy Doemberg (piano, keyboards); Stefan Hiemer (bass); Rolf Kohler, Olaf Senkbeil, Janie Dixon (background vocals). Producers: Charlie Bauerfeind, Dan Zimmermann, Chris Bay. Recorded at Hansen, Hamburg, Germany; Karo, Brackel, Germany; C.C.C., Braumingshof, Germany; FC Studios, Nurnberg, Germany between December, 1999 and September, 2000. Make no mistake; the members of Freedom Call are no slouches in the musical talent department. However, their particular choice of style for their artistic expression is a form of prog metal that is way too overblown and over the top in its fantasy and symphonic aspirations. The group gives us some segments of songs that really shine, but the overall result teeters between blatant pompousness and unintended silliness. ~ Gary Hill

Crystal Empire
$8.95 Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass instrument); Bill Ward (drums). With Paranoid, Black Sabbath perfected the formula for their lumbering heavy metal. On its follow-up, Master of Reality, the group merely repeated the formula, setting the stage for a career of recycling the same sounds and riffs. But on Master of Reality Sabbath still were fresh and had a seemingly endless supply of crushingly heavy riffs to bludgeon their audiences into sweet, willing oblivion. If the album is a showcase for anyone, it is Tony Iommi, who keeps the album afloat with a series of slow, loud riffs, the best of which -- "Sweet Leaf" and "Children of the Grave" among them -- rank among his finest playing. Taken in tandem with the more consistent Paranoid, Master of Reality forms the core of Sabbath's canon. There are a few stray necessary tracks scattered throughout the group's other early-'70s albums, but Master of Reality is the last time they delivered a consistent album and its influence can be heard throughout the generations of heavy metal bands that followed. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine While other frontrunners of hard rock/metal like Led ...

| | Ken Oak Half Step Down CD (2005)
Crystal Empire
$12.15 Album Description:Ken Oak is a Pop-Rock artist who blends Pop, Rock, Folk, and Classical into his own unique sound and style. Half Step Down features 14 original songs by Ken that have a range in styles that is rarely heard on commercially-released albums. "Almost every song could conceivably be a single on mainstream radio - a big credit to Oak, and a refreshing contrast from countless other albums fattened up with filler." - Anita Lu for Chopblock.com (formerly Yolk Magazine)Ken's debut full-length album contains three solid Pop songs (Maybe, Wonder, and End Credits) and two songs with an edgier Modern Rock feel to them (These Things and Analog Girl). There are some straight-ahead Rock songs (like Inside Me, Catching Up, and Leah), and some songs with a laid-back Adult Contemporary sound (Constellation, This Time). Just in case that's not enough for you, Ken also put a Bossa Nova song (Half Step Down), a Pop-Jazz track (Anyway), a Country ballad (Silhouette), and a Neo-Classical piece (Soma) on the album."Ken Oak is a unique artist in that he combines vintage songwriting acumen with modern pop sensibilities. His prowess for blending sounds both electronic and acoustic with expertly crafted lyrics demonstrate a level of artistic development rarely seen in today's more typical singer/songwriter." - Stephen Marsh, former chief mastering engineer at Sony MusicHalf Step Down features Ken's mellow baritone voice, smooth falsetto, poetic lyrics, catchy guitar riffs, and soulful cello lines. Although there are bound to be comparisons to artists such as John Mayer and Matchbox 20, Ken's music also contains appreciative nods to other influences such as The Smiths, Oasis, and Sarah McLachlan."Though Ken's sound is ...
