Disney Princess The Ultimate Song Collection is one of the better ideas for a Disney compilation: it's a collection of most of the memorable songs sung by the princesses in films spanning Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to Pocahontas and Mulan. The liner notes are full of tidbits from interviews with Antobal's family and musicians who worked with him (many of whom went on to achieve fame with their own bands) as well as illustrations. As there are no photos of Antobal himself, one is left of the impression of a reclusive impressario who was good at managing his band, but wanted to avoid the spotlight himself. ~ Megan Lynch excellent Cuban studio band featuring Alberto Socarras, vocalists Johnny Rodriguez and Panchito Riset and led by the brother of Don Azpiazu whose PEANUT VENDOR broke Latin music in the US. First released on LP in 1991 as Harlequin HQ 2081, the liner notes have been revised and many new tracks added. Antobal was the excellent Don Azpiazu's brother; both led bands in the vanguard of the movement to bring Cuban music to the North American public. The rhumba was the main musical form that these bands showcased, but this compilation also includes some congas. Both Antobal and Azpiazu were educated in the United States and thus in a good position to present Cuban music in a way that would appeal to Yankee tastes. They apparently calculated well, for both bands were very popular in the '30s, making tours of Europe and appearances at plum U.S. venues. This doesn't mean that the polyrhythms were utterly watered down, though. These recordings are as compelling as any Cuban music recorded in the '30s and are still throroughly exciting to listen to. Recorded live at The Jazz Bakery, Los Angeles, California on March 6, 1994. One of Southern California's more active jazz singers, Karen Gallinger makes her recording debut with a live performance at the famous jazz watering hole, the Jazz Bakery. The "active" as it applies to Gallinger means not only the number of gigs she plays, but the way she prances on this album. Upbeat, loose, and definitely hip, Gallinger shines as she delivers a play list of ten tunes, mostly familiar standards she infects with a large dose of freshness. The centerpiece is a seven-minute romping of "The Song Is You." Not only does Gallinger take this tune on a hair-raising vocal roller coaster ride, it's also one of the frequent occasions where the fine rhythm section of Jack Reidling, Tom Warrington, and Joe LaBarbera are given the freedom to express themselves. Their playing is important to making this CD as attractive as it is. While the temperature cools down on such tunes as "Estaté," Gallinger's husky, smoky voice still pulsates, here adding a touch of sensuality to help capture the picture of sultry summer this tune creates. Most of the time, Gallinger and her cohorts are moving along at a speedy pace. Gallinger manages to sing up-tempo while keeping her precise diction intact, no slurring of words here.
