The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele ...

BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty ...

Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman And The Theremin
Samuel J Hoffman Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman And The Theremin CDs  (1999) Import; Boxed Set

Slave Me songs
CD $26.95  Audio Samples
THEREMIN contains 3 original 10-inch LPs on 3 CDs: MUSIC OUT OF THE MOON (1947)/PERFUME SET TO MUSIC (1948)/MUSIC FOR PEACE FOR MIND (1950). In the late '40s and early '50s, a series of easy listening albums appeared featuring the then-futuristic eerie theremin of Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman. Waves in the Ether: The Magical World of the Theremin collects three of them -- 1947's Music out of the Moon, 1948's Perfume Set to Music, and 1950's Music for Peace of Mind -- onto one CD, with historical liner notes. (Yes, this 18-track, 53-minute CD does include all three of the albums, as albums had shorter playing times back then.) In truth, it's rather arbitrary who is considered the "artist" of these albums; Hoffman did contribute theremin, but the music was composed by Harry Revel, and conducted and arranged by Les Baxter (on the first two albums) and Billy May (on Music for Peace of Mind). Also in truth, these records really aren't as exotic as they might appear. For the most part they're corny lounge jazz-cum-soundtrack music, with gossamer violins, dramatic piano flourishes, and wholesome white bread vocal choirs and jazz scatting. Often you expect a voice to come over the music at any second exclaiming, "And now, live from New York City, the [fill in the host name] Show!," or the music to fade in favor of dialogue as the opening scene of some 1949 film melodrama starts. As for Hoffman's contributions, they're less dominant than you might surmise, with entire lengthy passages going by without the theremin making a sound. Also, perhaps in part because of the dated recording techniques, the theremin parts sometimes sound more like a shaky violin than a theremin, though they undoubtedly comprise the most unusual features of the arrangements. This is more valuable as a timepiece of how music of the "future" was envisioned in the middle of the 20th century than for the (ironically) dated music itself, but at least this compiles the three most well-known albums with Hoffman's theremin together in a well-annotated package. ~ Richie Unterberger Compiling three LPs recorded by theremin maestro Samuel J. Hoffman and composer Harry Revel between 1947 and 1950, this exemplary set is an ideal introduction to the eerily beautiful sound of inventor Leon Theremin's pioneering electronic instrument. The granddaddy of the outer-space exotica boom, Music Out of the Moon (credited to conductor/arranger Les Baxter) remains a landmark by any measure. The best-selling theremin record of all time, its celestial arrangements, wordless vocals, and idiosyncratic instrumentation established the template for dozens of space age pop records to follow, effectively defining the perception of what music from the cosmos would (or at least should) sound like. The music captures a wonder and beauty beyond the ken of human experience. ...

Oscar Peterson Plays The Duke Ellington Songbook CD  (1999)

Slave Me album
CD $12.05  Audio Samples
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios). Twice in the 1950s, pianist Oscar Peterson recorded an extensive series of songbooks devoted to one composer. From 1952-53, Peterson, guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Brown were extensively documented; in 1959, the pianist joined up with Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen to repeat many of the programs (since the group had changed and the music could now be cut in stereo) plus additional songbooks. This 1999 CD brings together both of Peterson's Duke Ellington tributes; the same dozen songs were recorded with each of the two groups. The Duke Ellington-associated material -- which includes two songs by Mercer Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's "Take the 'A' Train" -- mostly consist of familiar songs, except for Mercer Ellington's "John Hardy's Wife." While the earlier session has a fair amount of variety in tempo and mood, with Kessel offering ...

Lush isn't an adjective that one would have used to describe Anathema in the early to mid-'90s; back then, the British band was often described as blistering, ferocious, and brutal. But Anathema has changed considerably since then, and 2001's A Fine Day to Exit is, in fact, a lush and highly melodic effort that ...
