This is a collection of remixes from the TANTO TEMPO album. Remixers include Peter Kruder, Truby Trio, Rae & Christian, King Britt.
Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the American producers who covet its easy, sexy sound.
Gilberto's voice is assured and ...

| | Laura Pausini Resta In Ascolto CD (2004) Italian Edition
Original Swiss Folklore, Vol. 1
$8.29 One linguistic myth is that anyone who speaks Spanish is automatically fluent in Italian; the languages are quite similar, but similar is by no means the same as identical. However, it is true that anyone who is fluent in Italian has a definite advantage
No stranger to success, Europop sensation Laura Pausini sold over 25 million albums in her first decade or so of recording, quite a feat for someone who was just turning 30 years old and had never broken into the lucrative English-language market. Yet she essentially struck out when she did try to cross over to that English-language market in 2002 with From the Inside. Put mildly, the album bombed stateside. Its qualities (and the qualities of stateside consumers) aside, it was the first full-fledged failure Pausini had experienced in a career of multi-million-selling albums and sold-out world tours. Here was someone who had sung for Pope John Paul II at Christmas and for Barbra Streisand at a birthday party, yet she couldn't sing for ordinary Americans, who just weren't interested in her melodramatic schmaltz. And so Pausini took a sizable break, perhaps ...

| | Lys Guillorn CD (2003)
Original Swiss Folklore, Vol. 1
$11.39 If you are a no-name artist releasing your first LP, it helps to make a record where two members of Luna, three ex-Feelies (Dean Wareham, Stanley Demeski, Brenda Sauter, Glenn Mercer), and Robert Quine (Voidoids, Lou Reed, Tom Waits) all play on it. And while you're at it, why not cover Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Round a Memory" for good measure? You wanted to get the attention of your humble reviewer; you got it! And Danbury, CT's Guillorn doesn't squander it. This is one of those quiet, twinkling little pop records (they call it "interior rock," and hey, that's not bad!) where nothing is in any particular hurry. Bright, fuzzy, light, airy, and even a little cheery (but not too much so), this is a record made by someone who no doubt appreciates Nico's solo LPs and the very idea of Moe Tucker as much as the rest of us. But she also knows how to translate that into her own pretty pop, like the beguiling "Throne." The more country-inflected tunes don't work as well, even with their lyrics of "legendary cowboys," but with little organ moods and minor percussion always kept spare and the vocals always coming warmly from that sparkling background, you feel like you're in the middle of a snow globe. And the more strummy pop like "Impossible" is just plain strong. Very nice. ~ Jack Rabid
This self-titled CD introduces songwriter Lys Guillorn. In addition to singing and playing rhythm guitar, Guillorn sings vocal harmonies, plays lead and slide guitar, Hammond and Magnus Chord organs, bells, fuzz bass and melodica. For this record, she worked on subtle arrangements with the assistance of producer/engineer Jeff Feuerzeig, best known as the director of the film Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King and producer of tracks by Kickstand, Codeine, The Mad Scene, Kicking Giant, and Flying Saucer. Feuerzeig brought in a few guests who helped with the project including Stanley Demeski (Luna/Feelies), Robert Quine (Lou Reed/Richard Hell and the Voidoids/Tom Waits), Brenda Sauter (Feelies), Dean Wareham (Luna/Galaxie 500) and Glenn Mercer ...
| | Unknown Boy CD (2004)
Original Swiss Folklore, Vol. 1
$10.15 Unknown Boy, eh? Well, why not. At least somebody in LA is gutsy enough to give their band a name that brings to mind every Angeleno musician's worst nightmare: Obscurity. Or maybe it's Hunger. Whatever the case, my slightly crazy friend Dave wanted me to go to The Joint on a Friday night a few months ago to see this weird rock-thing; he was raving about, and, trusting his taste for interesting music, I went along for the ride. This was where I met Unknown Boy. 30 minutes of none stop sonic rock that culminated with lead singer Adam Daniels being covered in tar and feathered by two vixens in angel costumes - one white-winged; one black. The last fuzzed-out chord of the set crunched as the feathers settled on a perplexed and howling audience. I can't recall seeing anything quite like this before. Band members Adam Daniels (vocals), Chad Gunderson (Guitars), Manuel Baldanza (Drums), and Isaac Laskin (Guitars), stewed up Unknown Boy 2 years ago with a mission to write gritty pop sensible songs that ...
