Sean Connery, Charlotte Rampling, Sara Kestelman, John Alderton, Sally Anne Newton, Niall Buggy - Dir:John Boorman Sean Connery plays Zed, a 23rd century man who's doubts about the true divinity of a gigantic stone statue named Zardoz begins a revolution. Zed investigates to discover Zardoz is the facade of a secret society of brilliant immortals who play god in order to exploit the population of Earth. With the truth, Zed sets out to reveal the hoax and to destroy the Eternal's unjust rule in this surreal sci-fi fable from director John Boorman (Excalibur).

Director John Boorman's ZARDOZ presents the "perfect society" of the late 23rd century, in which no one dies and age is meted out as punishment. This way of life, however, is threatened when a man emerges from the barbaric multitudes and manages to break into the social order's encapsulated environment.

When Sean Connery abandoned the James Bond series to seek out new challenges, he turned to director John Boorman's sci-fi project, ZARDOZ. Connery stars as Zed, one of a carefully bred race of supervisors, the Exterminators, who oversee the agricultural labor of the neanderthal Brutals, since in 2293, with most of the Earth's surface off-limits as a polluted Outlands, industrial society has been abandoned. All worship Zardoz, a huge flying stone head who makes periodic visits to Earth to pick up grain consignments and issue bizarre statements involving the male anatomy through the voice of Arthur Frayn (Niall Buggy). An increasingly skeptical Zed decides to stow away inside the head, which deposits him in the Vortex, a commune of scientists and intellectuals who are ruled by the ever-youthful and asexual Eternals. They capture Zed, allowing geneticist May (Sara Kestleman) to use him as a research subject for a limited period, but he begins to arouse more than scientific curiosity in the commune's supposedly nonsexual female population.

Shot on location in Wicklow, Ireland. Budgeted at roughly $1 million, of which $200,000 went to Sean Connery's salary.

This is the only Sally Anne Newton video. Stars also making their debut in this video: Jessica Swift.

5 stars Engrossingly individual film
Made in a time when such films could be made without being influenced too heavily from without, this is a weirdly strange film that gets better with each viewing (sounds like a review for a certain Ridley Scott film). Zardoz will either love you and grow on you or take off into the skies never to be seen again. In other words, you won't have a choice about this film. You may turn the dvd off but it will continue to play inside your head if it appeals to your nature. That's the magic of Zardoz. Enjoy! ...if you're lucky enough to be one of those tuned in. Keth.

5 stars Low budget it might be, but extremely intresting.
I watched this movie recently for the second time, and it just opened up new story lines within it which I had missed the first time i watched it. Sean Connery is extremely good as usual. It doesn't have brilliant computer effects, but if you want to watch something which has a story line, is thought provoking and bizzare all roled into one I would recommend this film.

1 star Sean should be ashame!
One of the worst movies of all time. I purchased it so some of my friends and family could see it. Besides my girl friend at the time and two friends that saw this with me, NO one else has even heard of it. NOBODY would even believe that a movie could be this bad. It is!!! Sean Connery probably would like to be NOT listed in ths movie.

5 stars Greatest Film of All Time
This movie is brilliant, the ideas driving it are timeless but highly topical. This film should be noted by everyone or we to could face this bleak future of genetic stagnation...

Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern ...

Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but ...

Based on a novel by his wife Margaret Mazzantini, actor-turned-director Sergio Castellitto's DON'T MOVE is a strikingly accomplished drama that features an unforgettable performance by Penelope Cruz. Successful doctor Timoteo (Castellitto) is shocked to discover that his fifteen-year-old daughter has been in a life-threatening motorcycle accident. As a fellow surgeon performs a dangerous procedure on her brain, Timoteo recalls a passionate affair he had before his daughter was born. He met the woman, Italia (Cruz), when his car broke down on the outskirts of the city. After an initial first encounter that resulted in Timoteo's brutally raping the hapless Italia, he found himself shunning his beautiful wife Elsa (Claudia Gerini) and returning to visit Italia more and more frequently. What began as a dark, shameful outlet for his disgust with his bourgeois existence grew to become a genuine love that would change Timoteo's--and Italia's--life forever. Dripping with sensuality, ...

Writer-director Karin Albou is nothing if not intrepid: in LA PETITE JERUSALEM she grapples with three of life's most loaded and complex issues--faith, family, and sexuality. Set in a drab and aptly named housing project, Little Jerusalem, on the outskirts of Paris, the film focuses on a family of Algerian Orthodox Jewish immigrants. Albou's two main characters, the stunning sisters Laura (Fanny Valette) and Mathilde (Elsa Zylberstein), think about the movie's themes in completely opposite ways. Laura is that classic overly rational cynic--a philosophy student--who, firmly grounded in the realm of the profane, rejects sentimental notions about love and favors an emotionless approach to sex. Her sister, unhappily betrothed and devoutly religious, clings fiercely to the Torah's mandate against female sexual pleasure. Not surprisingly, both women become subsequently unmoored by relationships with different men--Laura finding herself irrationally in love with Djamel, a handsome Algerian, and Mathilde opening herself up to a feminist-fuelled ...

Director/producer Andrew Molina tells the true story of Japanese-born buisinessman Eishy Hayata, whose adventures eventually lead him to a spectular rise as an emerald czar in Columbia. Against a backdrop of mining politics, kidnappers, unions, violence, wheeling, dealing and massive corruption, the "emerald cowboy" eventually blasts his way to the top, and from the vantage point of modern day, tells his story. Using a sort of dramatic semi-documentary style, writer-director Andrew Molina interviews Hayata about his ...
