When a Jewish union leader from New York arrives to help them organize, he meets the impoverished and uneducated Norma Rae. Together they become a team, ready to wage a tough war against management. Set in the industrial South and based on a true story, Martin Ritt's NORMA RAE is a moving portrait of a woman's fight to improve both her own life and the deplorable conditions that exist in the mill where she works. Norma Rae (Sally Field) has worked at the textile mill for years, but when a union organizer from New York comes to town, Norma takes on the hostility of the mill's management and the apathy of her coworkers to try to unionize the mill. Field plays Norma Rae as a passionate woman who realizes her own potential and her need to rebel against the status quo. She is also infuriated by the conditions at the mill. When Norma, uneducated and poor, finally expresses her disgust with life at the mill, it is an electrifying moment, and Field radiates this energy for the rest of the film, providing an emotional core and drive that gives the picture its power. Theatrical release: March 2, 1979.
Filmed on location in Opelika, Alabama.
The film is based on the true story of Crystal Lee Jordan, who had been blacklisted by every textile union in the South for her fight against the conditions at those mills. However, with the success of NORMA RAE, Jordan began a new career as a spokeswoman for a textile workers union.
The theme song, "It Goes Like it Goes," was sung by Jennifer Warnes.

On his second album fronting his band Sadawi, trumpeter and composer Paul Brody continues his work in the avant-klezmer trenches, helping to drag that hundred-year-old music kicking and screaming into the 21st century. On Beyond Babylon he shows his unwillingness to be constrained by any ghetto boundaries, opening the album with an extended deconstruction of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" (which features a hair-raisingly skronky banjo solo by Brandon Seabrook), and making use of elements of both dub (on the contemplative and lovely "Timepeace"), and rock (note the guitar parts on "Fragment of Kafka's Friend") as well as lots and lots of modern jazz. Most of the album is thrilling; Brody's take on the David Krakauer composition "Klezmer à la Bechet" is a joyful romp in five/four meter, "Glass Dance" is a masterful chamber jazz excursion featuring guest Alan Bern on melodica; Brody's own "An Eye for a You" struts out like a brazen shtetl girl daring someone to dance with her. Only the scattershot and static "Masks and Faces" fails to impress. Highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson

With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), the troubled Captain "Painless" Waldowski (John Shuck), and the simpleminded Captain "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt). Altman's decision to present his film as a series of loosely connected vignettes rather than a traditionally unfolding narrative perfectly captures the freewheeling spirit so unique to early-'70s cinema.

In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.
KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not made a movie since 1974. Nakadai, a supporting player in earlier Kurosawa films, expertly portrays the leading role(s), almost always filled in the past by Toshirô Mifune. KAGEMUSHA also features the final screen appearance of longtime Kurosawa actor, Takashi Shimura. In order to help the film get an international release, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas served as executive producers.
