After a seven year absence from the recording scene (although they did continue to perform), Kate & Anna McGarrigle returned with HEARTBEATS ACCELERATING. Recorded in their home base of Montreal with their usual array of accompanists, it's perhaps their most contemporary-sounding work, production-wise. A song like Kate's "Mother Mother" is unmistakably based in the McGarrigle sisters's rich heritage, yet the track comfortably accepts up-to-date flourishes like drum programming and synthesized bass (alongside accordion and acoustic guitars). Their earlier attempt at "modernizing" resulted in the unsuccessful (critically and commercially) PRONTO MONTO--their only album to not be reissued on CD. This time they seem driven by real and internal desires to embrace all of these sounds, rather than by pressures to fit into the marketplace in a predictable manner. The use of various technologies and electronics never overwhelms the outstanding songs; HEARTBEATS ACCELERATING is another high caliber work from these Canadian sisters.
The sister's 7th album was released on former Tangerine Dream keyboardist Peter Baumann's Private Music label. Their sound was remarkably different from their earlier work with the addition of synthesizers and a more electronic background cushioning their tales of love, loss and life. The title track was covered by Linda Ronstadt on her "Winter Light" album. Critics took particular note of "I Eat Dinner", a haunting masterpiece reflecting the loneliness of a failed relationship.
Recorded at Studio Nomade, Montreal, Quebec.

Rolling Stone (11/15/90) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good Plus New York Times (Publisher) (11/18/90) - "..the sisters have made a bold and successful acknowledgment of contemporary developments by introducing computerized elements into their music, which is at once gripping and bleak.." Heartbeats Accelerating album
$13.65 Canadian duo Kate & Anna McGarrigle's first two albums (their self-titled 1976 debut and 1977's DANCER WITH BRUISED KNEES) engendered a unanimous critical cheer. 1982's LOVE OVER AND OVER is the spiritual kin to these albums. It is, fittingly, another winner--gorgeous, heartbreaking songs abound. Warm and inventive both lyrically and musically, each composition heads straight for the heart. The sisters write separately (except for some occasional lyrics), which allows for the contrast that is part of their successful union. A timeless recording, LOVE OVER AND OVER sounded as contemporary in 1982 as it did when reissued in 1997.

| | Kate & Anna McGarrigle Mcgarrigle Hour CD (1998)
Heartbeats Accelerating CD music
$13.29 This elegantly produced family album contains an embarassment of riches. For the McGarrigles aren't just any family. Besides sisters Kate and Anna (and Jane), there's Kate's ex-husband Loudon Wainwright, their singer/songwriter offspring Rufus and Martha Wainright as well as old friends like multi-instrumentalist Chaim Tannebaum and producer Joe Boyd. Add guests Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris and the table can get a little crowded here. The atmosphere never loses that saving intimacy however.
Each individual is allowed his or her moment in the limelight--Rufus shines especially on his original "Heartburn," Martha on hers, "Year Of the Dragon." Most of the numbers are old-timey parlor songs--whether public domain traditional folk, Stephen Foster's "Gentle Annie" or Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do." The McGarrigles' special gift has always been to invest this ...
| | Son Volt Trace CD (1995)
Heartbeats Accelerating music CDs
$8.39 Like a phoenix rising from the much-grieved-over ashes of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar's Son Volt brings a balance of heart and mind back to the country-rock community. Which isn't all that surprising, considering it was Farrar who added that indeterminable sense of melancholic reserve to UT's albums in the first place. Son Volt retains Farrar's Gram Parsons-like ideal that traditional music works best when contemplating simple emotional truths not diluted by narrative or melodic cliches. From his ex-UT partner, Jeff Tweedy (leader of Wilco), Farrar also learned that the thick and speedy guitar textures of punk rock are just as adept at baring the honesties of the soul--that punk rock has become the modern folk music.
TRACE constantly wanders between such apparent opposites. There are fiery, passionate declarations propelled by crunching and thick electric chords that never fall prey to roots-rock sloganeering--songs like "Loose String," a mid-tempo stomp with the dark observation that "too much living ain't no way to die," and "Route," a charging rocker that paints the life-on-the-road cliche ...
| | Wilco Being There CDs (1996)
Heartbeats Accelerating songs
$14.59 Wilco's second album is a sprawling collection of songs--19 of them on 2 CDs--about the rock and roll life and the price you pay to live it. A second album may seem a bit early to be getting into this sort of thing, but Wilco knows the life well; singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy and most of his bandmates had been on the road for years before with their underground country band Uncle Tupelo. Wilco rocks harder than Uncle Tupelo, and Tweedy's songs, which continue a theme previously explored by road warriors from Grand Funk Railroad to Paul Westerberg, offer a variety of characters and scenarios from that road.
From the struggling Floridian rocker who can't figure out why no one will come to hear his band (the Stones-inspired "Monday") to the lonely fan who lives through his idol's exploits (the gorgeous "The Lonely 1"), to that first taste of star treatment ("Hotel Arizona"), Tweedy captures these stories with grace and elegance. Despite all this introspection, Wilco hasn't forgotten how to rock. "Monday" truly burns, and "I Got You (At The End Of The Century)" has the ...
