Carl Nielsen: Symphony No. 5 Classical Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Nielsen Symphony 5 Played Perfectly! Years ago I fell in love with Nielsen's Fifth Symphony when I heard the recording on LP by Horenstein. I almost heard him conduct it in person in St. Paul, but he suffered a cardiac arrest on the podium. That particular recording is available on Nonesuch and also on Unicorn; it is fantastic. This recording comes within a hair-breadth of being as good. How a small town orchestra like the Odense SO can sound so darned good beats me, but they are great. Intonation is excellent, there are no fluffs, and in general they meet all expectations for this caliber of music. I don't know Edward Serov's conducting, but I certainly will because I intend to purchase (from CDUniverse, of course) all the Nielsen Symphonies, and anything else Serov has done of Nielsen! The first movement seemed to start out too slowly and it built too slowly; I found myself wanting it to get on, and then realized how tense I was waiting for the full orchestra to come in at double and triple sforzando! Tension! And did it come! The snare drummer did himself proud in his free-style drumming nearer the end of the first movement, and all in all I couldn't have been more satisfied! The second movement was serene, beautifully done and by the end it was like having your dentist say "All done!" and you realize what you've been through and survived. This recording stands near the top of my pantheon, just under Horenstein, Blomstedt, and Bernstein. For anyone who loves Nielsen, and for those who aren't acquainted, get acquainted with this CD, it is truely wonderful Submitted by Poppynogood (Iowa City, Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Phantom Of The Opera CD (1987) Original Soundtrack
Carl Nielsen: Symphony No. 5
$15.65 Music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics by Charles Hart.
It's a testament to Andrew Lloyd Webber's crowd-pleasing compositional skills that the original cast recording of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA went on to become the biggest-selling cast album ever. So when the time came to adapt his music for the film version of the monumentally successful theatrical work, Webber enlisted the aid of longtime collaborators Nigel Wright and Simon Lee. They produced an expanded orchestral version of the score, grander and more sumptuous than the original, and assembled a 100-member ensemble to do it justice.
However, the tragic story of the disfigured Phantom and Christine, the beautiful object of his desire, cannot be told without powerful performances of those roles. Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum quickly dispel any concerns regarding the adequacy of their portrayals. Butler's full-blooded renditions of "The Music of the Night" and the title song are tinged with a dark eroticism, while Rossum's account of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" skillfully conveys her character's vulnerability and conflicted feelings. The soundtrack also features a newly penned song by Webber, the poignant "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver, who appears in the role of Carlotta in the film.

| | Kelevala Heritage Kalevala Heritage - Ancient Finnish Songs CD (1996)
Carl Nielsen: Symphony No. 5
$11.69 These selections portray ancient folksongs from Finland, Karelia and Ingria. The original recordings were taken from the Folklore Archives of the Finnish Literature Society.
The oldest of these archival recordings of Finnish folk songs, made between 1905 and 1967, were captured on the first wax cylinder and lacquer disc technology available in the country at the turn of the century. They sample and preserve a lost folk-singing culture while exploring the relationship between the poetry of Kalevala, Finland's national epic, to the folk tradition. ~ Jason Ankeny
