Little Sumpin' Sumpin'
$12.29 Although Alton Ellis was never to receive the international recognition of such contemporaries as Desmond Dekker or Delroy Wilson, the singer was at least their equal. Launching his career as the duo of Alton & Eddie (Parkins) at the dawn of the ska age, Ellis' career has continued unabated since, both as partner with other singers (including his equally talented sister Hortense Ellis) and as a solo artist. Although he recorded for a multitude of producers, some of his most glittering work during the rocksteady/early reggae eras was cut with Duke Reid, and it is from Reid's Treasure ...

| | Tracy Chapman Telling Stories CD (2000)
Little Sumpin' Sumpin'
$6.25 Personnel includes: Tracy Chapman (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, melody harp); Emmylou Harris (vocals); Tim Pierce (acoustic & electric guitar, dobro, mandolin, sitar, strum stick); Steve Hunter (electric guitar, lap steel, dulcimer); Jaydee Maness (pedal steel); Scarlet Rivera (violin); Eric Rigler (low whistle, Uillean pipes); Patrick Warren, Tommy Eyre (organ, keyboards); Mike Finnigan (organ); Howie Hersh, Larry Klein, John Pierce, Andy Stoller (bass); Denny Fongheiser (drums); Alex Acuna, Denny Fongheiser (percussion); Iki Levy (programming); Glenys Rogers, Rock Deadrick (background vocals). Producers: Tracy Chapman, David Kershenbaum. Recorded at Royaltone Studios, North Hollywood, California. Forget that Tracy Chapman's fifth album shares a title with the Charlatans UK's fifth album (and sole masterpiece) Telling Stories -- as far any fan knows, Chapman probably isn't even aware of the Madchester group's existence. Instead, it should be viewed as what it is -- the sequel to New Beginning, the album that reaffirmed Chapman's status as a fine singer/songwriter to a wide audience. That record became a hit thanks to a bluesy, hooky cut called "Give Me One Reason." Telling Stories, as the title suggests, leans toward narratives, but not necessarily in the conventional sense of the term. There are no story songs, in the way that "Fast Car" was a story. Instead, they are emotional, poetic snapshots -- sort of like the musical equivalent of a dense, impressionistic short story. Chapman's songs on Telling Stories may not ...

| | Dells Always Together: Great Chess Ballads CD (2007) (Import)
Little Sumpin' Sumpin'
$16.19 2007 digitally remastered collection of heart-tugging ballads recorded by the famed Soul group for the Chess Records label in the '60's. 21 tracks including the previously unreleased "You Changed My Life Around". Shout.
Liner Note Author: Clive Richardson. As Clive Richardson admits in his liner notes, this British compilation is similar to the 1998 American MCA CD collection Oh What a Night! The Great Ballads, which was out of print by the time this 2007 anthology appeared. All 15 of the songs from Oh What a Night! The Great Ballads also appear on Always Together: Great Chess Ballads. The difference between the two discs, however, is a substantial one. Always Together: Great Chess Ballads adds six more tracks, including a previously issued one (the 1972 outtake "You Changed My Life Around") and a cut ("Since I Found You") that had not been issued until the 1992 comp On Their Corner: ...
