| | Batdorf & Rodney Life Is You CD Batdorf & Rodney Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Batdorf & Rodney had some modest success with their eponymous second album, and their third record, 1975's Life Is You, built on that record's progress, charting higher and launching a modest hit with a cover of Jim Weatherly's "You Are a Song," which stayed on the charts for seven weeks, peaking at number 87. "You Are a Song" is an example of what's right with the record -- a sentimental, sweet tune draped in strings and harmonies, a pefect representation of how folk-rock turned into mellow soft rock by emphasizing the melody and the feel. The rest of the record treads the same ground but not quite as successfully, largely because the songwriting of Batdorf & Rodney isn't as consistently good as Weatherly (who contributes another standout, "To a Gentler Time"). The duo -- John Batdorf on lead vocals, Mark Rodney on lead acoustic guitar -- are very earnest and intent on writing serious material (one track is a two-piece suite which, ironically, provides one of the better melodies here). Instead of giving the record weight, it occasionally makes the record sound open-ended and meandering, particularly when the tempo is slowed down. They're better at sprightly tempos such as the terrific "Is It Love," a breezy up-tempo number that should have been a hit. There's just enough of these to keep Life Is You interesting, but the album should have been sequenced better, since the ballads wind up impeding the record's momentum just a little bit too much. Nevertheless, there are more winners than losers here, with the best moments showcasing Batdorf & Rodney as an enjoyable Californian soft rock duo who may not have been as good as Seals & Crofts, but are still offered some appealing music in the same vein. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Batdorf & Rodney Life Is You Songs | 1. | Life Is You |

| Life Is You Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Memory Lane I remember when I first bought this album back in the late seventies early eighties. Then thirty years have past and all of my albums are gone (can't remember how)and with the introduction of CD's, I'm collecting songs from my time. CD Universe has made it possible for me to find all the hard to find (oldies) songs out there. Now it's not hard to stroll down memory lane again.

Melodious and Harmonious Duo worth a listen Batdorf and Rodney's only album available on CD (they only released 3 records in the early 70's). A duo whose lovely melodies and crisp harmony was overshadowed by the more commercial groups and duos like Seals & Crofts and England Dan & John Ford Coley. Still, worth a listen as their style was easy on the ears, songs well-written and tunes very catching. Unfortunately, the cost of this import may inhibit many from sampling the CD. hopefully their catalogue will be released by WEA at reasonable prices for fans (and others) to enjoy Submitted by a reviewer (Flushing, NY USA) Was This Review Helpful? A good place to start. This is the 3rd albulm and a very good one. I like the 1st and 2nd better and would rate both of them with 5 Stars. I hope that someone in the US will release all 3 on CD. If you like well crafted songs, incredible lyrics, harmony vocals and I belive some of the tastiest and best acoutic guitar interplay I have ever heard (especially on the 2nd album) then you cannot miss with these guys. Definatly a very strong christain feel to the writing, uplifting and impossible not to sing along with. I have all 3 on vinyl in very good condition (it took me 12 years to track down the 1st and 2nd to replace worn out copies). I have been waiting for along time to see these put on cd and have actually requested it from Rhino and a couple other labels. It is good to see someone getting around to it. Life Is You album
$15.95 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early ...
| | Souther-Hillman-Furay Band Trouble In Paradise CD (1975) Souther Hillman Furay Band
Life Is You CD music
$10.65 With producer Tom Dowd, known for his work at Atlantic Records, at the helm, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band seemed to be distancing itself a bit from its country-rock roots with its second release, the appropriately titled Trouble in Paradise. Here the band expands on the funkier aspects of its debut album, while at the same time slipping even closer to the middle of the road. On that record it was former Poco frontman Richie Furay who was responsible for the highlights, but this time out it's J.D. Souther, who penned four of the LP's nine tracks, who leads the way, with "Prisoner in Disguise" (recorded that same year by Linda Ronstadt) and the title cut the standouts. Still, Furay, whose two compositions were dominated by his recent conversion to Christianity, does connect with the lovely "For Someone I Love," which interestingly enough precedes the sleazy rationalizations of Souther's ...
