Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 21 Classical Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) RUBINSTEIN'S PATRICIAN BRAHS I heard Rubinstein many tines in live concerts. Hiis Brahms was invariably
compelling, profound, and patrician -
no false brilliance, no gratuitous
sentimentality. The most memorable
aspects of these live concerts were
the joie-de-vivre he conveyed
in his person and in his playing.
I do not remember him ever having to stoop to unnecessary motion, grimacing or other tricks of the trade to hold his adiences captive under the spell of music. Yes, he did make occasional mistakes. No, they did not matter.
Not all of his recordings do him justice. THIS ONE DOES. I particularly
liked the Sonata - probably the best
version around, fully satisfying, and impregnable to criticism.

Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 21
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly it is highly recommended to lovers of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 21
$10.69 Originally released on Atlantic (602). Includes liner notes by Alec Wilder and Gary Kramer.
Good two-record anthology that features outstanding cabaret vocalist Mabel Mercer. Her approach was brillant, but not for everyone; it was stiff by jazz phrasing standards, and put far more emphasis on technique than feeling. Yet, few have been better at doing highly stylized material. ~ Ron Wynn
Personnel: Mabel Mercer (vocals).

| | Patti Page Say Wonderful Things/Love After Midnight CD (2003)
Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 21
$10.59 This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out of print Patti Page LPs: Say Wonderful Things and Love After Midnight, issued in 1963 and 1964, respectively, and originally released on Columbia. These albums zero in on easy listening versions of standards from the songbooks of Sammy Cahn, Jimmy Van Heusen, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer, Edward Heyman and Victor Young. Not an essential purchase for casual listeners, but fans who have been waiting for these LPs to make the switch to CD will appreciate it. ~ Al Campbell
Full Title - Say Wonderful Things / Love After Midnight. Patti Page was 'The Singing Rage.' Her rich, husky voice made her one of the most popular vocalists of the '50s and '60s and she is still a favorite today. She won her first Grammy Award in early 2000! Page's smooth vocal delivery has launched thirteen Gold records on the Billboard charts. 'September Song', 'Days Of Wine And Roses' and 'Our Day Will Come' are some of the stand-out renditions on these original 1960's recordings. 24 tracks. Collectables. 2003.

$43.29 | | Mike Wofford Time Cafe CD (2001)
Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 21
$11.69 Mike Wofford, the California-based veteran pianist, brings sterling musicianship to the table on his first disc for Azica. Eight of the 12 tracks feature him in a trio setting with bassist Darek "Oles" Oleszkiewicz and drummer Duncan Moore; the remaining four are solo arrangements. Perhaps as a result of accompanying some of jazz's greatest singers, Wofford has a way of highlighting a song's inherent drama. This is already clear by the time he gets through the melody of the opener, "My Heart Stood Still." He's similarly inventive with "Just One of Those Things," "You Go to My Head" (played as a non-ballad), "Time on My Hands," and "You and the Night and the Music." Wofford also has an eye for unexplored material, like Les McCann's "A Little 3/4," Don Grolnick's chilling minor-key ballad "The Cost of Living," and Tim McMahon's darkly lyrical "Cyprus." On Duke Ellington's classic blues "Take the Coltrane," he opts to split the 12-bar chorus evenly, trading sixes rather than fours with Duncan Moore. (One wonders why this isn't done more often.) To complete the program, Wofford includes his own churning mid-tempo swinger, "H2," as well as two beauties by Oleszkiewicz. ~ David R. Adler
