(1 Customer Review)
Recorded live at Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 3, 1960 and Chicago, Illinois in June 1960.
The old cover photograph of Muddy clutching John Lee Hooker's guitar gave the impression that he was at a Folk Festival rather than the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival. However, the record revealed the King of Chicago blues at his very best, shouting his music above the discordant wail of a band that included Otis Spann, James Cotton, Pat Hare and Francis Clay. Film of the event shows a sharply dressed Muddy shimmying and jiving around the stage with the energy of a man half his age. Some of that atmosphere is apparent on the record, in a program that includes 'Hoochie Coochie Man', Big Bill Broonzy's 'I Feel So Good', recent singles 'I Got My Brand On You' and 'Soon Forgotten', and a massive 'Got My Mojo Working'. The set ends in poignant mood with the announcement of the end of the Festival and Otis Spann's improvised 'Goodbye Newport Blues'.

Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin and Jack Tracy.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (Universal Mastering).

Muddy Waters At Newport 1960
$12.89 The diminutive but mighty acoustic bassist Malachi Favors was a charter member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio, and since his passing both groups have suffered. This recording for El'Zabar and his revamped trio including longtime member saxophonist Ari Brown and guest violinist Billy Bang is the first offering with bassist Yosef Ben Israel filling the chair of the late Favors. Because the unit was so reliant on the witty and unique elegance of Favors, not to mention his good humor, the band is at once somber and joyous, mourning his departure and celebrating his rich and wonderful artistic life. This live performance at the River East Art Center in Chicago sports a production value that also reflects the mood of the band -- a bit detached and thin, but full of ...

Muddy Waters At Newport 1960
$16.45 Cerrito Country Music for the New AmericaâHow many of you out there are Spanish?â shouts the beaming, curly-haired singer in the fancy embroidered jacket.Only a few in the packed house raise their hands.âThatâs OK,â says the singer to the upturned faces. âBy the end of the night, youâll all be.â And pretty soon heâs handing out maracas and insisting everyone join in the show. The singer is Cerrito, and heâs creating a whole new throng of country music fans by singing and recording classic country lyrics in alternating English and Spanish. His latest album, They Know Youâre Gone, released September 2007.While American country audiences are just getting to know Cerrito, his voice is already familiar to fans in Mexico and Honduras and throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan. Country stars are also among his most enthusiastic supporters. He has recorded with two-time CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Janie Fricke and Hank Williamsâ daughter, Jett Williams. And heâs jammed backstage and at parties with the likes of Loretta Lynn, Vince Gill, Charley Pride and Ricky Van Shelton. William Thomas Cerrito is an Italian-American who fell in love early with Spanish culture and language. âI grew up in Rhode Island in a multilingual family,â he says. âMy whole family played country music. My grandmother would sing âYour Cheating Heartâ in Italian. Iâm one of six children, and all of us sang.âCerrito says itâs a misconception that New Englandâs soil was too rocky for country musicâor that only Scotch Irish people grew up singing country. âWhen the immigrants from Italy came to the United States, they didnât all settle in New York,â he points out. âA lot of them went to the Kentucky coal mines. That âs how the mandolin was introduced into bluegrass music. And there are lots of theaters in New England where you can hear country music, especially in the summer. I remember going to see Mickey Gilley and Crystal Gayle.âIt was his extended family, though, that gave Cerrito his country credentials. âMy mother and grandmother listened to Hank Williams, Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline. For my older sisters, it was artists like Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. My generation went for singers like Vince Gill and T. G. Sheppard. But I always came back ...
