| | England Dan Nights Are Forever CD (1976)
Michael Zager Dance Collection
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle ...
| | England Dan Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive CD (1978) Reissued
Michael Zager Dance Collection
$9.55 The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem here is right on, but the execution of the title track, is as musically contrived as it sounds. This album shows the worst, and the best, of this productive duo. "Running After ...
| | England Dan Some Things Don't Come Easy CD (1978)
Michael Zager Dance Collection
$10.65 If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" was written by Jeffrie Comanor and is far and away the best song on the album. This duo knew how to interpret; they were fantastic at it. The hit single is ...

| | G G Allin Rock 'N' Roll Terrorist CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Michael Zager Dance Collection
$14.45 G.G. Allin may just have been rock's premier carnival freak. Which is, all freaks considered, saying a lot. But for anyone who caught his act, or saw the documentary Hated, it would not seem such an outlandish claim. And like all great carnival freaks, it's hard to tell where the deformity ended and the cosmetics began. While Rock 'N' Roll Terrorist may not help solve this conundrum, it does provide an excellent -- though rather repetitive -- sketch of this guttersnipe enigma. Repetitive in that, once you've heard six or eight tracks/rants, you may feel like you've heard them all. And there's good reason for that. Again and again G.G. screeches about how much he hates the world and everyone in it; how he has his own perverse, "revolutionary" agenda; how he is prepared to commit any depraved act against any man, woman, or child; how violent death (preferably suicide) is the ultimate expression of non-conformity. Pretty quickly, one is inclined to believe that Allin's just utterly desperate to go "over the top" but doesn't quite have the vocabulary, or anti-musical smarts, to do it. At the same time, his work is the supreme mangled car wreck that you crane your neck to see. Heightening the experience on Rock 'N' Roll Terrorist is a slew of live cuts (make no mistake, Allin's prime "virtue" was as a live "artist"), and several not-so-obtuse spoken word pieces. Most of the songs of this two-hours-plus, two-disc set are badly recorded, badly played, grating punk -- though the playing tends not to be unbearable, genre considered, apart from a few absolutely appalling guitar solos that could not even take the escape hatch of "anti-music." And yet, like the guiltiest of guilty pleasures, there is some allure. Sometimes the lyrics click or the sonics blitz. Occasionally, the themes resonate a little and do indeed "beg the question." And just here and there, ...

| | Built To Spill Ultimate Alternative Wavers CD (1993)
Michael Zager Dance Collection
$21.49 The debut album by indie institution Built to Spill finds the Idaho rockers hitting the ground running with a vision that marries the prismatic pop sensibilities of Pavement with the cheap psych-fuzz of underground guitar gods like J. Mascis and the Bevis Frond's Nick Salomon. Tracks such as "Get a Life" and "Revolution" stack layers of warping lo-fi guitar gristle over jagged melodic bits that bob in the amplified froth. Bandleader, singer, and guitarist Doug Martsch--who shreds in continually inventive ways, mixing a panoply of hammer-ons, feedback squelchs, and distorted yawps in the many extended solos--roots his grandiosity in a student's understanding of rock history. He even bites lyrics from the Velvet Underground classic "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" on his "Nowhere Nothin' F*ckup", a song inspired by a Philip K. Dick character. Rock and roll nerd-dom never sounded this vicious--nor would Built to Spill ever again sound this rough and tumble. This is their only album recorded as the original trio featuring bassist Brett Nelson and drummer Ralf Youtz along with Martsch.
Built to Spill came from unusual parents: Doug Martsch used to be the chief songwriter for the Treepeople. He left the band because his desire to tour had waned to near nonexistent, but more importantly because Doug desired a new creative situation. Martsch enlisted the services of guitar friend Brett Netson from Boise's misunderstood psychedelic warriors Caustic Resin (whose debut Body Love Body Hate is available from C/Z) and a mysterious percussion fella named Ralf from Eugene, Oregon. Built to Spill (BTS), much like Blue Oyster Cult (BOC), Bachman Turner Overdrive (BOC) or a bacon/lettuce/tomato sandwich (BLT) are a very savory delight indeed. Mr. Martsch's motivation for recording this record was initially unknown, but considering that Doug has become one of the most lauded creative forces in the Northwest, ...
