| | Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Back To Quawwali/Nusrat Forever CD Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Discography of CDs
There's no doubting the remarkable power of Nusrat's voice, with its ability to transport the listener as he transports himself. These two albums (the first from 1995, the second a posthumous collection from 1999) offer the full range of his traditional music, although the former is more adventurous than the latter, with some soaring vocal work and sterling support from his group, or "party." Even though one eclipses the other, that's not to say the second disc is bad, by any means; there's some remarkable work on it, although Nusrat doesn't sound at the peak of inspiration he's hit elsewhere on disc. There's some excellent harmonium playing from Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, who also leads the party in its vocal backing, and the tablas are insistent, but never overwhelming. The focus remains firmly on Nusrat and his stratospheric flights of vocal fancy. Excellent stuff indeed. ~ Chris Nickson

| | E'Andre Undeniable CD (2005)
Back To Quawwali/Nusrat Forever
$16.45 Romantic, sexy, sensitive are just a few of the adjectives that describe E'Andre's music. Confidently branding his music as "Sexy, Urban-R&B" with the emphasis on "sexy." A bit eclectic, part old school and part new school all mixed together into a unique musical signature. You get the smoothness of Sam Cook, the sexy passion of Marvin Gaye and the melodic brillance of Stevie Wonder. All rolled into a dynamic, unique, signature voice that creatively animates each track with intricate vocal harmonies, arrangements and nuances that give it a distinct "E" Sound. An all around entertainer and meticulous artiste', E'Andre is a soul singer-gifted with a silky smooth first tenor voice that slides easily in and out of his signature falsetto, while exhibiting vocal control and freedom simultaneously. As a songwriter, E', as he is called by his inner circle, has an uncanny ability to write "hooky" songs that stay in your head, long after your disc player has ceased rotating. "I hear music during ordinary moments-you know, while taking a shower, or just taking in life-then the melody comes." Born and raised in Chicago, E'Andre grew up singing with his family's gospel group, The Radfords, a bon a fide "PK" - E' grew up on stage and feels most at home in front of an audience. "I gained confidence in my voice as a child. My mother made me do all the high parts in our show. I was so young, but I never had any fear on stage." E'Andre says that he is grateful for his early exposure to music and live performance, it has made him the artist that he is today-absolutely confident, easily commanding the stage and connecting to his audience effortlessly. Even though his musical roots grew out of gospel, E' knew his true musical ...

| | Helen Sung Sungbird CD (2007) After Albeniz
Back To Quawwali/Nusrat Forever
$14.65 Pianist Helen Sung's third CD as a leader heads in a different direction. During a European tour, she decided to look for some Spanish classical work to adapt for her group, choosing Isaac Albéniz's Espana, Op. 156. But for this recording, she intermingled her own compositions with solo piano interpretations of individual movements of Albéniz's work, creating a seamless recording in which one composer's contributions complement the other's. Her classical background is apparent, though she takes some liberties with the Albéniz's melodies. On the quintet tracks, her supporting band, including Marcus Strickland (tenor and soprano saxophones), bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Nasheet Waits and percussionist Samuel Torres, follow her muse and bring out the full potential of her catchy tunes. Clocking just under 43 minutes, Sung actually leaves the listener wanting more. ~ Ken Dryden
Though jazz and classical music historically have had a complicated relationship, there have been many efforts to intermingle the two - listen to Bill Evans' takes on Scriabin, Faure, and Ravel on his Trio with Symphony Orchestra recording; the Modern Jazz Quartet's Blues on Bach, and on the Miles Davis/Gil Evans masterpiece, Sketches of Spain. That fabled European country also provides the setting for 'Sungbird (After Albeniz)', the Sunnyside Records debut of the astoundingly talented, Houston-born, Chinese-American pianist Helen Sung. The album is Sung's incredible extension and elaboration on the legendary Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz's 1890, six-piece work for solo piano, Espana, Opus 165. This CD, with saxophonist Marcus Strickland, bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Nasheet Waits, and percussionist Samuel Torres, is the long-awaited follow-up to Sung's two Fresh Sound/New Talent label recordings, Helenistique and Push. "In 2006, I took the band on this CD (minus the percussionist) on a short tour in Spain and Andorra," Sung writes in her liner notes. "One of the gigs was a concert ...
