(2 Customer Reviews)
Principally recorded at Mr. Smalls Funhouse Studios, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The group known as Van Zant consist of latter-day Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Johnny Van Zant and his brother Donnie, carrying on the tradition of direct, sizzling yet accomplished, blues-tinged rock & roll. On VAN ZANT II, their tunes convey grim realities ("What The World's Coming To"), devotion ("Heart of An Angel"), and take-no-prisoners bravado ("Get What You Got Comin'"). As a bonus, blues-guitar firebrand Kenny Wayne Shepherd guests on two tracks.

"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with ...

Van Zant II songs
$20.25 THE VERY BEST OF includes a 46-page booklet with pictures and track information.
"Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
This 1994 greatest hits package (released in anticipation of the band's wildly successful reunion tour and album) supplants THEIR GREATEST HITS 1971-1975. It adds seven songs, but unfortunately deletes "Already Gone," one of their best rockers.
What's most interesting about THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES - apart from the presence of obviously classic songs like "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California" - is that it demonstrates that the band's esthetic was fully formed from day one. Despite the fact that the songs here span nearly a decade, listening to them back to back you could almost believe they were the product of one marathon recording session.
The Eagles' founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey were forthright in their desire to bring then-emerging country rock to new heights of commercial ...

Van Zant II album
$13.15 David Olney is generally characterized as a folk singer/songwriter, but that description doesn't quite jibe with the gutbucket country-rock music he actually plays. The folk tag is probably applied because, as much as his arrangements rock, they are in the service of his highly poetic lyrics, which he sings in a craggy baritone. Then, too, his songs, though newly written, often sound like old traditional folk songs. Here, in particular, "Voices on the Water," co-written with Gwil Owen, easily could be mistaken for some old song that developed out of a spiritual. Olney sometimes writes a basic love song to an acoustic guitar accompaniment, such as "Now and Forever," but more often his lyrics are allusive and his band veers back and forth in shambling rhythmic patterns that suggest the Tom Waits of Swordfishtrombones, without ...

Van Zant II CD music
$10.45 Listening to this trippy psychedelic effort, one can't help but feel a certain sense of irony. Barclay James Harvest were known as a "poor man's Moody Blues," but the Collectors could just as easily have qualified for the label -- their attempts at serious (or pretentious, in the case of "Howard Christman's Older") composition, the soaring choruses, the flute noodling in the background, will all recall the English group. What's more, the two bands have surprisingly similar backgrounds, having evolved (or devolved) from R&B inspiration to art rock and progressive rock. Howie Vickers isn't half the ballad ...
