| | Patrick O'Donnell Limbo CD Patrick O'Donnell Discography of CDs
O'Donnell is a songwriter with a bizarre personal background that includes pizza delivery, law school, a period bumming around Prague, and insurance litigation. Now his resume also includes running his own independent record label, on which he has released albums by the likes of Swell and a Czech band called Uz Jsme Doma, as well as this, his solo debut. It's an interesting piece of art punk retrospection that harks back fairly explicitly to the best part of the 1980s. His singing is relatively tuneless, though not in a bad way -- it goes nicely with the controlled aggression of the guitars, and when he bellows obscure Biblical references ("If I thought it would make her dance for me/I'd put my head on a platter"), the effect is just right. O'Donnell does tend to wear his influences on his sleeve: "Love Songs Make Me Nauseous" is either a parody of or a tribute to the Cure (it's not clear which), while "I Just Wanna Degrade You" could have been a Stooges outtake. Then there's the Joy Division cover, on which O'Donnell executes an Ian Curtis impression that is downright creepy in its accuracy. This isn't a perfect album, but it's good enough to make you wonder what's next. ~ Rick Anderson
The tycoon behind Washington D.C.'s Skoda Records puts out the obligatory vanity release. O'Donnell was influenced by such artists as Robyn Hitchcock, Tom Waits & Mission of Burma. The tunes on this album feature moody, sardonic lyrics & run the gamut fr

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Limbo
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", ...

| | Kansas City Blues (1924-1929) CDs (1994) Import
Limbo
$13.45 This collection presents the complete recordings of Lottie Kimbrough and Winston Holmes, delving into the Kansas City music scene of the 1920s. Kimbrough, who dominates this collection, was an excellent performer of the blues, and her two duets with Holmes integrate the yodels and sound effects of the latter performer into her readings of classic blues; their union of country yodel and bluesy moan, backed by the sophisticated, driving guitar playing of Miles Pruitt, reflects a stylistic and collaborative creativity indicative of Kansas City's musical community. Also joining Kimbrough on two tracks is her singing and kazoo-playing brother Sylvester; unfortunately, heavy surface noise hinders the enjoyment ...
| | Kenny Blake An Intimate Affair CD (1996)
Limbo
$9.79 When folks think of Pittsburgh, they no doubt think of Three Rivers, steel, The Steelers and The Pirates, but Kenny Blake's musical life has been all about making the world hip to the city's great jazz scene. Bringing more than 20 years experience into a seamless hybrid of soul and tradition, the saxman got the word out on his hometown stylishly on his first three discs in the early 90's. While eclecticism is still the dominant part of his make-up, Blake's latest release, the smartly textured, jazzy and street smart romp Intimate Affair, rings as his most focused outing to date. Helping solidify Blake's vision, while giving the saxman a chance to focus solely on his technique, is Seattle-based composer/producer Erik Huber, who wrote and produced all the original tracks, as well as playing keyboards. The moodshifts come fast and furious right from the opening title track, which opens with a late night vibe before Phil Sheeran adds a gentle guitar explosion to ...

Limbo
$16.19 Digitally remastered by Nick Watson (February 2000, SRT, Cambridge, England).
Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. Live and Raw: 1970-1971 is indeed live and it is indeed raw. Very raw -- nose-bleeding, flesh-tearing, ear-achingly raw. No matter that the two live performances within were broadcast live on the BBC and should, therefore, exist in pristine quality somewhere on earth, this is the view from the other side of the dial, with a tiny mono microphone pressed up against a little ...
