Emerging in 2001 on a small wave of hype touting Norway as a new musical hotbed, QUIET IS THE NEW LOUD was startling in its earnestness, even to ears that had been softened by the likes of Belle & Sebastian. Where that Scottish band tempers its twee-ness with clever, winking wordplay, Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe are more akin to a latter-day Simon & Garfunkel or a couple of Nick Drakes who are lucky to have found each other.
Disarmingly sensitive, poetic tracks such as "Parallel Lines" ("What's the immaterial substance that envelops two/That one perceives as hunger and the other as food") are sung by the duo in honeyed harmonies with a pleasantly laid-back delivery. Oye and Boe eschew drums on all but two tracks (upbeat highlights "Toxic Girl" and "Failure"), simply using layered guitars and the occasional string, piano, or trumpet flourish to accent the hushed power of their songs. The overall effect is one of bedroom introspection, well suited to their nostalgic, inward-looking lyrics.
Recently signed by the UK office of Parisian label Source (Air,Phoenix), Kings Of Convenience are Erik Glambek Boe and Erland Oye from Bergen, Norway. Favoring simplicity and melody over big production, they write emotive, intimate music that will connect instantly with fans of Nick Drake and Belle and Sebastian. Standard jewelcase. 2001 release.

Kings Of Convenience Quiet Is The New Loud Songs Quiet Is The New Loud Music Quiet Is The New Loud Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Suckered in by the Single Having heard two versions of the single "Toxic Girl", I purchased the album hoping for a least one or two similarly upbeat, clever, catchy tracks. Sadly, the entire rest of the album is indeed "quiet", minimally arranged, with consistent lapses into an unfortunate sameness. It is, disappointingly, a record of background music with one spectacular song. Submitted by a reviewer (Hollywood, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Pretty good I had never heard of kings of convenience until a friend showed me some of their music. It was pretty good and I actually liked it. There's no doubt that if you like smooth music you'll definetly like this cd.

Submitted by naranjanoise (chile) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hail to the Kings Quiet is the new loud is the one of the best albums I have heard in years. It is one of those rare albums that you can put in and listen to from start to finish over and over and over again. If this isn't in your collection head out to your local independant music store. Don't walk.. run. Submitted by a reviewer (Chicago, IL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$20.19 Bringing to the stage the old-time music they’ve been playing for years, on porches, in kitchens and at festivals across North America - Erynn Marshall (CBC - Galaxy Award 2006), and Chris Coole (Guitarist of the year – 2006 Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards) use fiddles, banjos, guitars and their voices to bring to life music from another era. Whether playing bluesy fiddle tunes, banjo breakdowns, singing old ballads or country songs it’s evident these two musicians have dedicated themselves to the Southern traditions that have inspired them. They also compose vintage-sounding originals and blend old, new, near and far into a unique music all their own. For more information please visit www.hickoryjack.com. Erynn’s fiddling has that sense of delight in it, even in the lonesome pieces – a feeling like having a fine time playing music with your friends on a West Virginia summer night, crickets singing, air heady with the perfume of tobacco flowers and sweet clover. – Kenny Jackson Erynn Marshall is not only a fine scholar of old-time fiddle tunes, but she can play them wonderfully. – Pete Peterson Old-Time Herald Magazine Vol. 11 Nov. 2007 Erynn Marshall’s old-time fiddle playing is front and centre and superb. …old-time tunes played with a brilliance rarely matched by anybody on the North American scene. –Mitch Podolak, Penguin Eggs Magazine 2007Erynn Marshall - A native of Victoria, BC and now a resident of Galax, Virginia, ...
