| | Don Preston Transformation CD Don Preston Discography of CDs
Pianist Don Preston's jazz pedigree is a little bit strange. Despite having spent time in the 1950s hanging around with such respected figures as Tommy Flanagan and Elvin Jones, he's probably best-known as longtime keyboardist for Frank Zappa and one of the original members of the Mothers of Invention. That digression from the jazz mainstream didn't come out of nowhere; as early as the mid-'50s he was helping Paul Bley and Charlie Haden redefine the parameters of jazz composition and improvisation. And his modern style of writing and playing have clearly been deeply influenced by his years of rambling all over the musical map. On this excellent set you can hear him paying tribute to the jazz avant-garde of the 1960s (especially on "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque") and to the European art music of the mid-20th century ("Walking Batteriewoman"). The long-form "Lind Sonata" is written in a contrapuntal style that harks back to J.S. Bach by way of Hindemith. But as outside as he gets, he never fully departs from a jazz feel -- that's partly due to the texture of the piano trio, and partly due, one suspects, to the fact that that's where his heart truly is. This is not, for the most part, easily accessible music, but it will richly reward anyone who makes an effort to approach it. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Ray Wylie Hubbard A. Elightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C) CD (2010) Digipak
Transformation album
$11.98 Texas songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard pushed life to the margin and lived to sing about it. In the process, his songs now possess the tenderness of a poet, the empathy of a historian, and the raw nerve of a card shark. On 2009's A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C), he adds "mythmaker" to his songwriting qualities. Hubbard strips his music to the bone here, and uses the Mississippi Delta blues tradition to his own ends. His music is raw yet utterly contemporary and crafted. Snarling acoustic, slide, and electric guitars played bottleneck style, dirty mandolins, pots, pans, stomp boxes, basses, organs, harmoniums, drums, rattles, shakers, and tambourines are the instruments that fuel this impressive collection. On "Down Home ...

$14.34 A tasteful and elegantly modern blues band with jazzy overtones, the Hollywood Flames came together in 1975 on the West Coast as the Hollywood Fats Band, led by guitar phenom Michael "Hollywood Fats" Mann and featuring Larry Taylor on bass and drums, Richard Innes on piano and Hammond B-3, Fred Kaplan on piano and guitar, and harmonica whiz and vocalist Al Blake. The group specialized in a kind of informed update of the classic electric blues bands of the 1950s, but were also capable of eerily accurate acoustic ...
