Surfer Girl/Shut Down, Vol. 2 album for sale by Beach Boys was released Mar 13, 2001 on the Capitol label. Includes liner notes by Mark Linett, David Leaf & Brian Wilson. SURFER GIRL was the first Beach Boys album to credit Brian Wilson as producer, and it propelled the band away from their simple surf band origins into the realm of classic pop. The opening, "Surfer Girl," remains a transcendent moment in '60s pop, while the stunningly beautiful "In My Room" is an obvious forerunner to the later classic song cycle of PET SOUNDS. David Garrett Encore CD (2009)
Surfer Girl/Shut Down, Vol. 2 CD music Released in 2008, Encore is the third studio album from German-American violinist David Garrett. Its 15 tracks includes classical reworkings of contemporary pop songs (Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," AC/DC's "Thunderstruck"), movie themes (Pirates of the Caribbean, Zorba the Greek), and traditional classical pieces (Bach's "Air," Debussy's "Clair de Lune"), plus one original composition, "Chelsea Girl." ~ Jon O'Brien
2009 album from the British violinist. Part maverick, part genius, total virtuoso, David Garrett, 25, has been surprising people since before he was four years old. It was then that his father gave him a violin and, without any lessons, the toddler picked it up and began playing. Fast forward just four years and David was already one of the foremost violinists in the world working with the most celebrated teachers and performing solos with legendary orchestras and conductors. 15 tracks including 'Smooth Criminal', 'Who Wants To Live Forever', 'Hungarian Dance #5' and more. Universal.
Personnel: David Garrett (violin); Giorgio Serci (guitar); Ray Vega (trumpet); John Haywood (piano, harpsichord); James Genus (double bass).
Recording information: Electric Lady Studios, NY; Livingston Studios; Studio 1, Bulgarian National Radio.

Hollies Stay with the Hollies/In the Hollies Style CD (2004)
Surfer Girl/Shut Down, Vol. 2 album for sale Brit rock pioneers, The Hollies' two 1964 releases: STAY WITH THE HOLLIES and IN THE HOLLIES STYLE are grouped together for this release.
The year 2004 marked the 40th anniversary of the release of the Hollies' first two albums, Stay With the Hollies and In the Hollies Style, by EMI Records' Parlophone label, and EMI celebrated by reissuing the albums together in its "60s 2 on 1" CD two-fer series. Originally released ten months apart, in January 1964 and November 1964, respectively, Stay With the Hollies and In the Hollies Style trace the group's development in its second year of national popularity in the U.K. The Hollies had broken out of their Manchester base with their debut single, the Top 40 hit "(Ain't That) Just Like Me," in the spring of 1963, and after nearing the Top Ten with "Searchin'" they finally made it with "Stay," their cover of the American hit by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs, in the fall. That triggered the release of Stay With the Hollies, containing the new hit (but not the earlier singles), along with a standard set of other covers of American favorites by Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and others. By 2004, these songs were much more familiar than they were in Britain in 1964, in some cases in superior recordings by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. (It's worth noting, therefore, that the Hollies' version of Dr. Feelgood & the Interns' "Mr. Moonlight," heard here, preceded the Beatles' studio recording by seven months -- although the Beatles had been playing the song live much earlier -- and that their version of Arthur Alexander's "You Better Move On," also here, was released the same month as the Stones'.) But the Hollies' energy and enthusiasm are undeniable, even if they are not as distinguished as their competitors. Three more Top Ten hits followed "Stay" in 1964 before the appearance of In the Hollies Style, none of which are featured on the album, which may help explain why, although Stay With the Hollies had reached number two in the British charts, In the Hollies Style didn't chart at all. (Or maybe it doesn't explain anything, since U.K. albums commonly did not duplicate singles releases in the '60s, and the group clearly was on a roll.) In any case, the 12 songs represent a transition in the Hollies' music that finds them writing more than half of the record through the Allan Clarke/Tony Hicks/Graham Nash partnership pseudonymously known as "L. Ransford." Ransford turns out to be very Beatles-influenced, for the most part, although Nash makes an excellent debut as a lead vocalist on the ballad "To You My Love." In the Hollies Style has become something of a "lost" Hollies album, and it proves to have some promising, if not really accomplished material. Thus, the two-fer is really an album largely for collectors. ~ William Ruhlmann

Get Quick How the Story Goes CD (2005)
Surfer Girl/Shut Down, Vol. 2 buy CD music Every five years or so, some Philadelphia-based band makes one killer psych-pop album. First there was the Original Sins' Move, followed by the Lilys' Better Can't Make Your Life Better, followed by the Asteroid No. 4's King Richard's Collectibles. Like clockwork, about a half-decade after the last of those, here's the debut from Philly's the Get Quick, and it might be the best of the lot. The opening "Live Without It" makes the album's sonic antecedents clear, with a vocal harmony line and main guitar riff eerily similar to the Flamin' Groovies' "Yes It's True," itself a near-rewrite of various Searchers and Beau Brummels hits. Following that is the new wave grind of "New Plimsoles," with its killer snot-rock distorted guitar riff and squealing sax interjections. The rest of the album flits between those two styles, jangly Beatlesque power pop, and a noisier, heavier brand of art-psych freakbeat. Thanks to the trio's arranging skills (violins and organ regularly join those saxes, which enliven enough of the songs that they should invite guest reedsman David Fishkin to join the band full time) and singer/guitarist Erik Evol's songwriting chops, the combination makes for an incredibly entertaining listen. Particular highlights include the jittery "Blaue Reiter" (Evol's tribute to the German post-impressionists) and "Happy," a driving, anthemic song that makes an uncredited encore at the album's end. Every song on How the Story Goes is a winner, and the album as a whole is one of the most entertaining underground pop releases of 2005. ~ Stewart Mason

The Get Quick: Jamie Mahon, Mitchell Joy, Erik Evol.
Personnel: Maura Hallowell (violin); David Fishkin (saxophone).

Sounds Of Blackness Night Before Christmas, Vol. 2 CD (2004)
Surfer Girl/Shut Down, Vol. 2 album for sale Sounds of Blackness released their first Christmas album, Night Before Christmas: A Musical Fantasy, back in 1992. Produced by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, one of the most dominant urban production teams of the 1980s, it was full of the big, cavernous, and somewhat trippy R&B sound the duo specialized in, and the result, at least to some ears, was more bombast than innovative, a problem that is at least somewhat addressed in Night Before Christmas, Vol. 2, which was recorded in 2004 with Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam notably not aboard. Sounds of Blackness specialize in what might be called urban fusion gospel with a strong theatric base, and for this holiday album they've turned up the percussion on everything, so these tracks fly along on enough energetic polyrhythms to keep Santa jivin' forever. Although it's a little disconcerting to hear "Silent Night" sung to looped drums, the truth is, somebody had to do it eventually, so why not Sounds of Blackness? One of the best tracks here is "Do the Funky Chitlin'," which is, well, hugely funky, if only marginally seasonal. The final three cuts are instrumental backing tracks, and they're wonderfully huge in sound, with massed horns and strong, bold string arrangements (especially the jazzy big-band take of "Holiday Love 2"). In the end, this second volume seems less forced and more fun that the first installment, and the omnipresent drums alone will get you dancing as you hang those stockings with ease. ~ Steve Leggett
Sounds of Blackness: Geoffrey Evean Jones (vocals, rap vocals); Chreese Jones (vocals, soprano); Cynthia 'Funkytown' Johnson (vocals, alto); Robert Edwards (vocals, tenor); Geoffrey Jones, Billy Steele (vocals, baritone); Core' S.
