4 stars Trip around the World
The 'untreated' version gets automatic props- it is Cheryl Crow after all, and this is perhaps some of her best work, if for the chill factor alone. The recording's 'mood' bespeaks what she herself admitted to be the state-of-mind while making Sessions - just toking it up, and chillin' out. It shows, but in a good way. Besides, let's face it: she writes great songs and she's hot to boot, so who are we to complain? Now, let's up the ante a bit. Take everything you know and like about her...and plug it into her Marshall amp, cranking it up to full gain. That's what the enhanced version of the Globe Sessions is like. Color, detail, soundstage are all up-close-and-personal and in-your-room on the DTS (ES, mind you, not 5.1 as stated in actual descriptions of the CD) version of the already great offering. So, if you've got the system to support it (6.1 channels, which adds a center rear), Globe Sessions is not quite like any other CD you'll have ever heard and not soon forget. We're all familiar with the songs that made the album popular: "My Favorite Mistake," "There Goes the Neighborhood," and "Anything But Down." But what you're not familiar with are the other little gems on the album, particularly track 8 as I know it, "The Difficult Kind." Wow! Talk about sitting next to her in the booth as she was recording it. Again, on a high-end system, you literally are vibrating on her vocal cords the image is so detailed. It is perhaps my favorite new track, and thankfully I've got the mustard to really show off this song. Sure, you'll still hear a great presentation on an a basic-to-average 5.1 system, but to really do any enhanced, multi-channel disc justice you really need to have the jewels to back it up. The Globe also offers two other surprises. You'll find yourself continually hitting the 'back' button on your remote to listen again to track 12, "Crash and Burn." Let the track play out and you'll find suprise #2: a nice little easter egg several minutes after the the last track's end. Yup, DTS ES AND some protein. It doesn't get any better than this. So load up, cue up and giddy up! Did I mention she's hot?

Having stayed out of the recording studio for four years prior to making his comeback album, 461 Ocean Boulevard, Eric Clapton returned to recording only a few months later to make its follow-up, There's One in Every Crowd. Perhaps be hadn't had time to write or gather sufficient material to make a similarly effective album, since the result is a scatter-shot mixture of styles, leading off with two gospel tunes, one a reggae version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." Clapton and his second guitarist, George Terry, had written a sequel to "I Shot The Sheriff," "Don't Blame Me," which Clapton sang in his best impersonation of Bob Marley's voice. The other originals included "Opposites," whose lyrics were just that -- day, night, life, death, etc. The album's best track, naturally, was the blues cover, Clapton's take on Elmore James's "The Sky Is Crying." But There's One in Every Crowd was a disappointing follow-up to 461 Ocean Boulevard, and fans let Clapton know it: While the former album had topped the charts and gone gold, the latter didn't even make the Top 10. ~ William Ruhlmann
