| | Rebecca Parris My Foolish Heart CD Rebecca Parris Discography of CDs
Well regarded in the Boston area for years, vocalist Rebecca Parris, like some of the great singers, is 90 percent style, which she exudes gracefully. This is her first recorded collection of ballads, and she demonstrates an ability to capture the essence of well-known tunes such as "The Shadow of Your Smile," "My Foolish Heart," and "Never Let Me Go." Parris has a deep, mature voice that speaks with years of experience. She has the ability to make the lyrics her own, mouthing them as though she personally experienced the pain or other emotion. Her voice may not appeal to everyone; it has a bit of the aura of the upscale nightclub. Nevertheless, there is no denying that Parris is able to get to the heart of the lyrics in a way that not too many others can. One might object to the sometimes-saccharine arrangements, particularly the use of the synthesizer, but the lush recording quality makes this a very accessible listening experience. The vocalist is joined by a competent rhythm section that serves her well (talented pianist George Mesterhazy, bassist Scott Steed, and drummer Matt Gordy, with Paul McWilliams added on piano on "Yesterday I Heard the Rain.") Often, the group straddles the jazz/pop aesthetic, but this recording should please her many fans and attract new ones. ~ Steven Loewy

| | Arthur Blythe Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
My Foolish Heart CD music
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and ...
