Ten tracks from Way Out West unfold on this eponymously titled album, which finds them crafting an uplifting house sound for legendary dance label Deconstruction.
Although Way Out West began their career in straight-ahead house, the duo works through many different forms on their album debut. "Domination" ascends into airy drum'n'bass territory after a mainstream intro, while tracks like "King of the Funk" and "Drive By" get more than a little aggressive, in contrast to the easygoing funk of "Questions Never Answered." Altogether, Way Out West is a varied, engaging debut. ~ John Bush

As good as electronic dance albums get Don't skip this if you like inspired and well produced dancefloor compositions that are doubly good in the headphones or on the living room hifi! Submitted by Vince (Mesquite, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Going Deep This album is a fantastic journey through the Electronic Dance genre. I had a layover in London, so I stopped into a record shop. BT's ESCM was out earlier that week (and not yet released in the States) so I picked it up, but before leaving I asked the guy what else was good, along the lines of BT, Fluke, and early FSOL stuff. He gives me Way Out West. It turned out to be my best purchase ever. The follow up album, Intensify, is equally as enthralling. Take a trip: Way Out West! Way Out West CD music
$11.65 This sophomore release from Ulrich Schnauss displays the German producer/composer's ability to create ambient tapestries, replete with shimmering keyboard effects and lush chordal variety. But what makes this release unique is Schnauss's penchant for warm melodies and pop-influenced refrains. Here Schnauss forges his own voice, blending together the imagistic ...

Way Out West songs
$34.89 Don't look now, but the dance world caught up with you -- two albums ago. Way out West, the duo of Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff, were early arrivals to Britain's progressive house party, pioneering the sleek melodies and polished breaks of mainstream British dance during the early '90s, following closely on from Oakenfold's vision of stadium house. After a self-titled 1997 LP debut saw them poised to blaze further trails, its 2001 follow-up, Intensify, was definitely a step backward; WoW sounded very confident, but the music lacked any hint of justification for that belief. Third album Don't Look Now isn't impressive, either. It's an admitted grab for pop-chart fame, with Warren and Wisternoff lugging along a new vocalist, Omi, who despite protestations of real talent, simply apes the sound of nearly every other female vocalist who's been heard in a house production unit since the end of the millennium. (Her languorous voice is teased out with a few processing tricks.) The beats are trad beyond belief, the production is pedestrian (even for commercial house), and worse yet, the duo haven't written a single compelling song, much less the next Dirty Vegas television crossover they'd need to carry a record like this. What dance fans will move to is a far cry from what drives pop fans, and Don't Look Now barely manages the former. Instead of sticking with the rest, Way out West should start thinking about what it was that made them distinctive ten years earlier. | | Ulrich Schnauss Far Away Trains Passing By CDs (2001)
Way Out West album
$14.69 On his full-length 2001 debut, German electronica artist Ulrich Schnauss offers up an immediately engaging and hypnotic set of instrumental tracks that mix Cocteau Twins-like ambience with dance-oriented beats and samples. Atmosphere and melody are nicely balanced here, making the disc appealing to both fans of contemporary "chillout" techno and the 1990s shoegazer scene.
Thanks to Far Away Trains Passing By, an all-too-brief record that encompasses tingly breakbeat, icebox-cold electro, and nippy downtempo, it shouldn't be too long before Berlin's Ulrich Schnauss gets name-dropping of his own in reviews of up-and-coming producers. Within these six tracks, Schnauss earns his comparisons to Boards of Canada and other members of the electronica elite with nary a reservation to be found. It's not only the sheer strength of the majority of these tracks that make the record so enjoyable; the closing and ending numbers neatly bundle everything together, giving it the feel of a concept record without any of the pretensions. From the sun-kissed "Knuddelmaus" to the contemplative "Molfsee," it's a quicksilver spin through an expansive terrain of lush melodies, atmospheres, and beats that alternately jab and tickle. While the paramount "Molfsee" is the easiest point of reference as far as the Boards of Canada ...

| | Dionne Warwick My Friends & Me CD (2006)
Way Out West album
$9.19 Her debut for Concord, MY FRIENDS AND ME, finds legendary pop icon Dionne Warwick revisiting her classic hits from the 1960s and '70s in the company of other reigning divas. Her duet partners--Cyndi Lauper, Reba McEntire, Olivia Newton-John, rapper Da Brat, and salsa icon Celia Cruz, to name a few--cross (and ultimately render meaningless) several genre lines in a delightful expression of musical eclecticism. "Windows of the World" gets a vibrant hip-hop makeover, Lauper gets wonderfully soulful on "Message To Michael," and Cruz points out a new direction to "San Jose." With FRIENDS like these, Warwick ...

| | Marva Whitney I Am What I Am CD (2007) (Import)
Way Out West album
$23.65 Widely regarded as the funkiest of all James Brown's singers, Marva has been singing since childhood and first made her mark as part of the James Brown Revue in the late-1960's. However it wasn't long before the Kansas born soulstress was cutting records of her own, many of which have since become rare-groove collectors items. Marva's aim to make "real soul music, that touches you and makes you dance" has seen a string of releases over the years, which have provided some of the hardest working samples in hip hop. The 45 King's classic "The 900 Number" features the looped sax intro from Marva's "Unwind Yourself", (although popularised by Chad Jackson's "Hear The Drummer Get Wicked"), along with many a career credited to her version of "It's My Thing". Since the rejuvenated interest in all thing funky (thanks to Mark Ronson et al!) the time is right for Marva to step back into the limelight and reclaim her crown as Soul Sister #1. Produced by Soulpower's DJ Pari and Ryo Nakata and recorded in Toyko and ...

| | Lance Keltner CD (2003)
Way Out West music CDs
$11.49 LANCE KELTNERLance Keltner began playing guitar at age 10. By the age of 12 he was rocking the bar scene in Oklahoma and Texas to packed houses fronting his own band. There was never any doubt that Lance would pursue a career in Rock-n-Roll. At age 19 Keltner moved to Austin Texas where he quickly became an important part of the then burgeoning hard rock scene. Keltner had grown up on the blues, but was now transmitting those blues riffs he had learned as a young boy through several 100 watt Marshall Stacks, opening shows for everyone from Joe Satriani, to Eric Johnson, and the Allman Brothers. In 1991 Keltner signed a recording contract with East/West Atlantic records. Lance released one critically acclaimed disk on East West. Lance spent the better part of the 1990's touring with his own band around the Southwest United States, as well as serving as a hired gun for several other young rock artists. Most of the 90's were spent on a bus, or on the stage. Keltner signed with Provogue records in 1999 and released "Empty V" a collection of blues rock influenced gems produced by legend Andy Johns. Andy, as you all probably know, worked with everyone from Led Zeppelin, to Bad Company, and Van Halen. Ian "Mac" McClagan of Faces fame added keyboards to the record. Keltner toured Europe twice in 2000 to enthusiastic crowds. Lance was told that he would probably not be asked to perform at any festival shows in Europe in 2000, as he was a newcomer. Much to everyone's surprise Keltner was asked to perform at festivals in Germany as well as the Tegelen Blues Rock Festival in the Netherlands during the summer of 2000. Keltner and band put on a show that was nothing short of devastating. On touring in Europe, Lance says, "The audiences that we played for were for the most part nothing short of amazing. I think the fact that we are not a straight up blues band surprised them at first, but usually by the second or third song of the set the folks would be up and Rocking". 2001 brought a new release from Lance Keltner called "Last of the Cowboy Vampires". Lance chose Andy Johns to produce again with incredible results. The record includes several straight up rockers "House of Blue Light", and "Pocket full of Money", as well as the obviously radio friendly "Love like Abilene" and the dark, ambient tones of "The Ledge" and "Chain Gang". Keltner revisits his roots with the story of a young Comanche man living in Oklahoma in modern times in "Anadarko" and takes us to church in the gospel flavored "I'm Ready". Guests on the record include Eric Johnson, Grammy award winner, and five-time winner of Guitar player magazine's best overall guitarist award. Eric added the chilling, Clapton, Cream era inspired lead work on "Chain Gang". David Grissom (former John Mellancamp/Joe Ely guitarist) co-wrote and added guitar work to "Pocket full of money." Keltner finished work on "Last Of the Cowboy Vampires" in late November of 2000 and then headed out to Los Angeles where he performed in the new Rod Stewart video scheduled for international release in February of 2001. Lance and band toured extensively in Europe beginning in mid March of 2001, and returned for festivals in the summer. Lance Keltner and Cowboy Vampires headlined a festival show in Berlin attended by 60,000 enthusiastic Rock fans, played to 9,000 people in Luxembourg, and performed on the world famous Leverkusen festival televised to 20 million music fans in Europe. Regarding the years tour plans Keltner says "We brought an arena style rock show to clubs. We carried our own lighting rig, and sound, and the shows were absolutely rocking". 2002 brings a new record and new tours for Lance Keltner and Cowboy Vampires. The new album simply titled "Lance Keltner and Cowboy Vampires" will be released in April by Ulftone records in Germany ...
