| | Patrice Rushen Pizzazz CD (1980)
Tune Me Up
$11.79 When Patrice Rushen was being lambasted by jazz snobs for making the switch from jazz instrumentalist to R&B/pop singer, she was also winning over quite a few people. R&B fans didn't care if she was no longer playing long, improvised piano solos with Joe Henderson or Hubert Laws; they loved her singing, and couldn't have cared less what jazz snobs thought of her new direction. Rushen's profile in the R&B world continued to increase with Pizzazz, her second album for Elektra and fifth overall. The song that did the most to make this LP a success was "Haven't You Heard?," a gem of a single that soared to the top of R&B radio play lists and was among Rushen's biggest hits. Many listeners bought Pizzazz because of "Haven't You Heard?," and they quickly discovered that the rest of the album was also excellent. Drawing on such influences as Earth, Wind & Fire, Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, and the Emotions, Rushen has no problem holding an R&B lover's attention with treasures that include the funky opener "Let the Music Take Me," the soulful ballad "Settle for My Love," and the perky "Keepin' Faith in Love." Pizzazz ...
| | Miles Jaye Humanity CD (2003)
Tune Me Up
$13.65 "As a musician, the late Grover Washington, Jr. said, "Miles stands out as someone who always looks for new musical direction and succeeds."Top industry record producer George Duke said of Miles, "...this guy can do it all and do it well..."WDAS-FM Radio Personality Tony Brown says Miles is "an artist in the true sense of the word." and from R&B great, Teddy Pendergrass, "Miles is one of the best all around vocalist I've heard in a long time."Miles Jaye returns to the forefront of music with his 7th project, HUMANITY, an undeniably brilliant CD fro the new millennium. With Miles' unmistakable voice, stirring guitar performances and poignant lyrics that touch the heart and soul, HUMANITY is a musical masterpiece that continues to elevate the status of this daring and innovative musician and songwriter. With three major recordings released on Top Priority/Island Records "MILES,? "IRRESISTIBLE" and "STRONG,? he delivered such hits as "Let's Start Love Over;? "I've Been A Fool For You,? "Heaven,? "Objective,? "Sensuous". As a writer, Miles has penned and recorded more than 40 original compositions ...
| | Slave Show Time/Visions Of The Lite CD (2005)
Tune Me Up
$10.39 This compilation from Collectables pairs together Slave's sixth and seventh albums, 1981's Show Time and 1982's Visions of the Lite. Putting any part of this band's output back into circulation is an admirable move, especially since Show Time has remained one of the best funk albums of the early '80s -- a point lost on a lot of potential fans since it remained out of print for so long. The band's last album with Steve Arrington, Show Time contains a healthy chunk of their most enduring singles ("Snap Shot," "Party Lites," ...
| | Five Special Special Edition CD (1979)
Tune Me Up
$9.69 This is the first of three albums the group recorded. While most of the songs are attractively arranged and written with buoyant melodies, they seem to deviate from that joyous feeling initially conveyed. On some of the tracks, Bryan Banks' lead vocals are inconsistent, with the exceptions being "Why Leave Us Alone" and "You're Something Special." The former did crack the R&B Top Ten, with its disco rhythm track. The latter is the most adoring number on the album. The arrangement complements the lyric, which comes across as tender and sincere as ever. ~ Craig Lytle
Ron Banks (of the Dramatics) produced Five Special, a five-man group featuring his younger brother Bryan. The two groups are vastly different; Five Special is more laid-back and jazzy than the Dramatics. Bryan sings in a light, wafer-thin falsetto that's pretty to hear but lacks bite and fire. Special Edition is like a Chinese meal; you enjoy it while it's playing, but it fails to satisfy, and you're starving for sounds again in an hour. That said, "Jam," "Heaven You Are to Me," "Do Something Special for Your Lady," and "Why Not Be Mine for a While" are all arresting ...
| | George Lewis Changing With The Times CD (1993)
Tune Me Up
$14.69 Trombonist/composer George Lewis made a career out of straddling the divide between avant-garde jazz and contemporary "art" music, ranging from his incendiary and amazing work in Anthony Braxton's groups to his own deep involvement in real-time reactive software programs. Sometimes he absolutely nails it, as with the extraordinarily beautiful Homage to Charles Parker, but more often Lewis seemed to err on the side of academe, resulting in excessively cautious, somewhat arid music. Here, texts of one sort or another are utilized in each piece and the listener's enjoyment may be largely determined by how willing ...
