The triple CD collection MACK THE KNIFE brings together 40 classic tracks from legendary jazzman Louis Armstrong.
This collection is a mixed bag of live recordings, made towards the end of the trumpeter Louis Armstrong's long and illustrious career, including his popular versions of "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," as well as Dixieland staples such as "St. Louis Blues" and "New Orleans Stomp."
Recorded in 1957, exactly 11 months after the excellent live recordings that comprise THE GREAT CHICAGO CONCERT, MACK THE KNIFE is another fun show from the same band, the second version of Louis's "All Stars." The occasion of this recording was a special July 4th Newport Jazz Festival show in celebration of Satchmo's birthday. According to contemporary reports, however, the party took a strange turn when a pre-show argument over the concert's line-up somehow led to a buck naked Louis screaming at promoters in the middle of the backstage area.
If there were any lingering feelings of hostility when Pops hit the stage, though, they aren't noticeable here. In fact, the only thing out of the ordinary is Louis' playing, which is better than ever. Blowing like a man half his age, Armstrong's tone is clear as a bell, his phrasing dead-on and his energy seemingly boundless. The rest of the band follows suit admirably, with trombonist Trummy Young playing the consummate straight man to both Louis' jokes and his extraordinary trumpet chops. MACK THE KNIFE is a near-perfect example of Louis and the All Stars at their peak, and an immensely enjoyable record for serious jazzbos and casual listeners alike.

With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.

Assisted by such talented friends as soprano-saxophonist David Liebman, Bob Mintzer on tenor, pianist Richie Beirach and bassists Dave Holland and Victor Bailey along with many other jazz and world music players, Wertico explores originals that range from eerie vamps and poppish grooves to odd sound explorations and more straightahead structures.
