| | Louis Armstrong Mack The Knife CD Louis Armstrong Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered by George Horn (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
The triple CD collection MACK THE KNIFE brings together 40 classic tracks from legendary jazzman Louis Armstrong.
This collection is a mixed bag of live recordings, made towards the end of the trumpeter Louis Armstrong's long and illustrious career, including his popular versions of "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," as well as Dixieland staples such as "St. Louis Blues" and "New Orleans Stomp."
Recorded in 1957, exactly 11 months after the excellent live recordings that comprise THE GREAT CHICAGO CONCERT, MACK THE KNIFE is another fun show from the same band, the second version of Louis's "All Stars." The occasion of this recording was a special July 4th Newport Jazz Festival show in celebration of Satchmo's birthday. According to contemporary reports, however, the party took a strange turn when a pre-show argument over the concert's line-up somehow led to a buck naked Louis screaming at promoters in the middle of the backstage area.
If there were any lingering feelings of hostility when Pops hit the stage, though, they aren't noticeable here. In fact, the only thing out of the ordinary is Louis' playing, which is better than ever. Blowing like a man half his age, Armstrong's tone is clear as a bell, his phrasing dead-on and his energy seemingly boundless. The rest of the band follows suit admirably, with trombonist Trummy Young playing the consummate straight man to both Louis' jokes and his extraordinary trumpet chops. MACK THE KNIFE is a near-perfect example of Louis and the All Stars at their peak, and an immensely enjoyable record for serious jazzbos and casual listeners alike.
Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 4, 1957. Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance.
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Trummy Young (vocals, trombone); Edmund Hall (clarinet); Billy Kyle (piano); Squire Gersh (bass); Barrett Deems (drums).

Mack The Knife album
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.

| | Kenny G Miracles: The Holiday Album CD (1994)
Mack The Knife CD music
$6.05 "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Over the past decade, since first gaining popularity with the Jeff Lorber Fusion, soprano saxophonist Kenny G has become one of the most celebrated instrumental stars in all of popular music. By fusing elements of contemporary jazz with the most lyrical aspects of pop and R&B, Kenny G has created an enduring sound signature and a fan base that rivals that of any vocalist.
It is precisely these lyric, vocal gifts that make Kenny G's sound so instantly identifiable. And on MIRACLES: THE HOLIDAY ALBUM, the saxophonist has turned his attention towards some of the most enduring, engaging melodies in popular music. Inspired in part by the birth of his son, the album has a mellifluous melodic quality, a reassuring warmth, that transcends the holiday season.
Part of the credit must go to composer-arranger Walter Afanasieff, who has wielded his production ...

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Mack The Knife album
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.

Mack The Knife CD music
$12.05 Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed ...

Mack The Knife music CDs
$8.85 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of MAIDEN VOYAGE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
Probably the best in Herbie Hancock's series of fine Blue Note albums from the 60s, Maiden Voyage finds him in what is basically the Miles Davis band of the time, with Miles replaced by the young Freddie Hubbard. Hancock has always been a fine composer, but Maiden Voyage contains two classic compositions in particular - the beautiful `Dolphin Dance', and the atmospheric and popular title track. Saxophonist George ...
| | Paul Wertico Yin And The Yout CD (1993)
Mack The Knife songs
$9.95 Paul Wertico (best known as drummer with the Pat Metheny Group) displays his wide musical tastes on this interesting CD. Assisted by such talented friends as soprano-saxophonist David Liebman, Bob Mintzer on tenor, pianist Richie Beirach and bassists Dave Holland and Victor Bailey along with many other jazz and world music players, Wertico explores originals that range from eerie vamps and poppish grooves to odd sound explorations and more straightahead structures. In general the longer tracks work better than the short interludes. The leader mostly stays in the background except for his 31-minute tribute to Max Roach ("The Max Factor") and he is content to push the lead voices. This impressive effort grows in interest with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow
Paul Wertico is the drummer in The Pat Metheny Group.
Recorded at Baby Monster Studios and Skyline Recording Studios, New York, New York; Nordine Group International, Chicago, Illinois.
Personnel: Paul Wertico (drums, cymbals, percussion, electronic percussion, programming, drum programming, percussion programming); Brian ...
