On this pristine-sounding reissue of his 1971 album, vocalist/pianist/songwriter/associate of Van Morrison Georgie Fame slides through 12 mellow original compositions, including "I Believe In Love," "Children Of My Mind," "Foolish Child," and the title cut.
Going Home boasts a maturity and subtlety often missing from Georgie Fame's previous LPs. Its simple approach strips away some of the more gimmicky elements of his earlier efforts, emphasizing the increasingly honest soulfulness of his vocals. Keith Mansfield's thoughtful arrangements likewise eschew excess in favor of a wonderfully mellow sound that perfectly underscores Fame's natural warmth and grace. Electric piano grooves further establish the set's smoky, jazzy atmosphere. Best of all are the songs, each of them covers and impeccably chosen. Kenny Rankin's "Peaceful" proves a particularly evocative selection. ~ Jason Ankeny

Twenty of his earliest solo sides, from the late '50s, a few of them previously unissued. A lot of this New Orleans R&B is derivative of Fats Domino and Lloyd Price, but the harder-rocking, funkier sides point to his more individual work of later decades. "Cha Dooky-Doo," "Arabian Love Call," and a previously unreleased duet with Larry Williams on "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie-Woogie Flu" are typically fun and infectious New Orleans R&B novelties; "I'm a Fool to Care" gives us a taste of his soulful ballad singing. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Crowbar Larger Than Live (And Liver Than You've CD (1971) (Import) Canada
Going Home
$15.25 Larger Than Life (And Live'r Than You've Ever Been), the second album by Crowbar, was originally released on the now defunct Canadian independent label Daffodil Records in 1971 as a two record set and achieved gold record status upon its original release. Repackaged on a single CD by the Unidisc label, this recording represents the best performances by Crowbar taken from a live radio broadcast of a concert held at Massey Hall in Toronto on 23rd September, 1971. This high energy performance by Kelly (Captain Canada) Jay and company features the band in top form with renditions of some of the band's best known songs from their debut album Bad Manors, some rock and roll and blues cover songs and a rousing ending with the band's biggest hit "Oh What a Feeling." Along with Crowbar, this recording features support performances by members of Lighthouse, Dr. Music, Everyday People and King Biscuit Boy. One of the best live albums to come out of Canada in the early 70's, Larger Than Life (And Live'r Than You've Ever Been) is a testament to the popularity and prowess of one of Canada's top blues rock bands and an essential addition any rock fans music library despite ...
| | Spaceheads Low Pressure CD (2002)
Going Home
$12.35 On Low Pressure, Spaceheads Andy Diagram and Richard Harrison bridge the gap between jazz and electronica with their characteristic trumpet loops, gurgling synthesized sounds, and metallic beats. Songs like the title track use a lazy, laid-back groove, part Miles Davis, part Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, to create an image of uneasy times. Low Pressure is future noir -- music for sci-fi film soundtracks of tomorrow. "On a Clear Day," the would-be chase scene, relies on beats charging over a foreboding low end, "The Lugano Affair" is mystery and danger shrouded in intrigue, and the astounding sparkle of "Astro Temple" could make it what Hitchcock called "the McGuffin." Spaceheads masterfully connect the '70s, nu bop, and electronica for an interstellar mix that, while conjuring some of the same emotions ...

$2.99 | | Tord Gustavsen Changing Places CD (2003)
Going Home
$14.59 This release signals in the then 33-year old, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut outing for the ECM Records label. His fellow compatriots, bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, round out this jazz piano trio offering. Fundamentally speaking, the group seemingly works its palate into that classic "ECM Records" aesthetic, comprising echo-laden sonic characteristics and a chamber-esque vibe. Otherwise, Gustavsen demonstrates meticulously construed faculties via a tasteful approach, ringing up notions of the late Bill Evans, amid a conservatory-type demeanor. To that end, the pianist shines forth as a gifted melody maker via a series of deftly executed choruses and sublime themes. The bulk of this production consists of the trio's probing inclinations and lightly implemented rhythmic structures. Gustavsen's multifaceted arsenal features an abundance of swirling arpeggios, nimbly rendered harmonics, and gently fabricated block chords. Alternatively, the total ...
