KYLIE is a collection of early Kylie Minogue, bringing together some of the first and best of the Australian popsters extremely successful hits. "I Shoudl Be So Lucky," "It's No Secret," and "Look My Way."

While the production values on Kylie's debut are dated at best and the tunes are nothing but standard late-'80s Stock-Aitken-Waterman bubblegum, there are some rather endearing qualities to it. Firstly, she shows a lot more personality than the other Stock, et al. frontperson, Rick Astley. Secondly, her cuteness makes these rather vapid tracks bearable. Her cover of "The Loco-Motion" made only small waves in the U.S., but this was the album that launched her career as both pop star and icon in Europe. ~ Chris True

The album that started it all for the former Australian soap opera star. The production team of Stock, Aitken & Waterman got hold of her and thus began the gush of hits. The biggest are represented here with her cover of 'The Locomotion' and 'I Should Be So Lucky'.

Recorded at PWL Studios in London; Alan Eaton Studios and RBX, Melbourne, Austrailia.

Personnel: Kylie Minogue (vocals), Mike Scott (keyboards, background vocals), Matt Aitken, (keyboards, guitar), Neil Palmer (keyboards), George De Angelis (keyboards), Dee Lewis, Mae McKenna and Suzanne Rhatigan (background vocals).

5 stars The First From Kylie
This was the first cd ever released by Kylie & she was just a teenager back then, but unlike most of todays young stars (Britney, Lindsey, Ashlee...etc), SHE has real talent! This cd includes her worldwide #1 (including the US) "Loco-motion", & her BIG UK hits such as "I Should Be So Lucky", "Je Ne Sais Pas Pouquoi", & "Got To Be Certain", as well as the minor US hit "It's No Secret", & the Japanese hit single "Turn It Into Love". From start to finish, you'll be impressed with this debut album by our Miss Minogue!

General Public All The Rage CD  (1984)

Kylie
CD $7.39  Audio Samples
First out of the gate with a new band after the English Beat's acrimonious fracture in June 1983, General Public was the first post-punk supergroup, gathering the Beat's Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, the Specials' Horace Panter, and other veterans of the U.K. ska revival. (Mick Jones, freshly booted from the Clash, was originally announced as General Public's lead guitarist; although he left the group very early on to start up Big Audio Dynamite and doesn't appear in the album photos, his guitar does appear on nearly all of the album's ten tracks.) Frankly, All the Rage could quite easily have been the fourth English Beat album, as it's a clear continuation from 1982's Special Beat Service. The ska sounds are largely absent, replaced by a mixture of catchy Brit-pop -- someone in the group is clearly a fan of both the Beatles and Elvis Costello & the Attractions -- and occasional reggae influences. The closing track, "General Public," is a sneering putdown of British politics and the attendant old boys network, the most political song the boys had written since the days of "Stand Down Margaret" and one of their most effective reggae tunes ever, with echoes of the threatening throb of '70s classics like Culture's Two Sevens Clash. However, more of the album is along the line of the hit singles "Tenderness" (the biggest U.S. chart hit of any English Beat-related band until Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy" five years later and one of Wakeling's best lost-love songs) and "Never You Done That": creamy commercial pop marrying Wakeling and ...

Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD  (1965)

Kylie
CD $6.19  5 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room. Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. ...

VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD  (2002)

Kylie
CD $6.39  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine." Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" ...

CD $11.99  3.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the modern-day jam bands that ...

Antony I Am A Bird Now CD  (2005)

Kylie
CD $12.49  5 stars Audio Samples
Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of honest, uncluttered emotion, but never go over the top. The communication is direct and immediate, as wisps of melancholy settle around the listener. Guest shots by kindred spirits Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Banhart, and Reed himself vary the tone a bit, but the fragile beauty of this album is a singular, affecting thing. Features Lou Reed,Devendra Banhart ...

Dredg Catch Without Arms CD  (2005)

Kylie
CD $8.49  4.3 stars Audio Samples
Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content. Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing harmonic underpinnings. This is due in part to singer Gavin Hayes, who sounds more like U2's Bono than a metal screecher. Hayes's ...

Curved Air Second Album CD  (1971)

Kylie
CD $11.59  3 stars Audio Samples
Time has not treated Curved Air's second album kindly. Of course it was always dominated by "Back Street Luv," which isn't simply one of the band's own finest moments, it's also one of the crucial singles of the early 1970s. But across this straightforward reissue of the accompanying album, the savage innovation which was the hallmark of their Air Conditioning debut, and the brilliant eclecticism which would characterize their next set, is nowhere in sight. Which is weird, because it always used to sound quite good. In its place, a crop of relatively straightforward but sonically flat rock songs are distinguished by Sonja Christina's most conventional, cool vocals yet -- only "Back Street Luv" truly draws any true emotion out of her, while the band's much vaunted classical/rock fusion only shakes its fist during the closing "Piece of Mind," although it must be admitted that when it shakes, it really shakes. A building, foreboding 13-minute epic, crowned by a genuinely spine-tingling recitation from TS Eliot's "The Wasteland," "Piece of Mind" is the kind of performance which you just know was played endlessly in college dorm rooms of the age. The segues from mounting rock to pondering piano seem hopelessly old-fashioned now, the building tension of violin and percussion seems obvious and hackneyed. In 1971, though, Curved Air were pioneers in every sense of the word and it is neither their fault, nor this album's, that we're not so easily impressed any longer. But maybe it isn't time which has treated this album so poorly, but the slipshod manner in which this album has been converted to CD. It sounds lifeless, sludgy, even (in places) a little slow. ...

Lovers of ragtime piano will not want to miss this gem of a two-disc set, which for the first time gathers performances of all known compositions by the great rag composer James Scott. Though his reputation is overshadowed by those of his contemporaries Joseph Lamb and, especially, Scott Joplin -- and though many details of his biography and personal life remain obscure -- this collection should convince any listener of Scott's prodigious talent and significance as an American composer. His compositions tend to be a bit more ...

Bento, like most aspiring bands, began as a side project. Just a guy with an acoustic guitar, who liked to cover his favorite songs. Though cover songs made those around him happy, they were not enough to fuel Scott's ambition. A sense of urgency, spontaneity, and creativity was missing. So Scott did what seemed most natural. He wrote song after song and recruited a team to help fulfill a vision of making sincere music.Angelito Mesina was a high school friend who Scott asked to play bass in the band. Drummer Jamie Quon was a childhood friend who played baseball with Scott when they were in grade school. Elvin Reyes, a co-founder of Classified ...
