CLEOPATRA is a lengthy, sprawling, spectacular love story, helmed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, depicting Cleopatra's manipulation of Julius Caesar and Marc Antony in her ill-fated attempt to save the Egyptian empire. The lavish, stunning production stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in legendary on- (as well as off-) screen performances.

This epic, spectacular love story of Egyptian queen Cleopatra and the Roman leaders Julius Caesar and Marc Antony has dazzled audiences with its elaborate sets, daring costumes, and thrilling sea battle since its release, but these can't compare with Elizabeth Taylor as the mesmerizing Cleopatra, struggling to save her Egyptian empire. When this film was released, it was known as much for its opulent filmmaking as it was for its huge budget overruns--it took two years to film because of Taylor's various ailments and a major script rewrite by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, moving the shooting studio from England to Italy, and replacing the original director and the actors to play the Roman leaders--as well as the very public and tempestuous offscreen affair between costars Taylor and Richard Burton, who duplicated their romance on the silver screen as the doomed Cleopatra and her true love, Marc Antony. Despite all the hubbub surrounding the film, audiences realized that its spectacular story could not be denied, and it has remained a classic ever since. The triple-star power of Taylor, Burton, and Rex Harrison (playing Julius Caesar) radiates throughout this lengthy production, and Mankiewicz, a consummate magician at depicting the shadings of human emotion, directed this threesome in one of the most famous and gloriously powerful love triangles ever to be captured on film.

Rouben Mamoulian was the original director of CLEOPATRA, but Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who directed Elizabeth Taylor in SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, took over after numerous delays. At the time of its completion, CLEOPATRA was the longest film in history at 4 hours and 3 minutes; it was cut by 21 minutes for its release. It was also the ninth biggest moneymaker of all time in the domestic market, even before its premiere, and the most expensive film made (before TITANIC in 1997), largely as a result of overruns caused by Taylor and Richard Burton's tempestuous relationship on- and offscreen. A 1934 version of CLEOPATRA was directed by Cecil B. DeMille, starring Claudette Colbert in the title role.

Cleopatra Quotes/Excerpts:

"Your Roman generals become divine so quickly!"--Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor) to Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) "Without you this isn't a world I want to live in--much less conquer."--Cleopatra to Marc Antony (Richard Burton) "You have a way of mixing politics and passion."--Julius Caesar to Cleopatra

A 1963 epic...getting difficult to find. A Classic! Everyone knows the storyline (or do they?) Good battle of the sexes...not always won by the Romans! Many good 'young' & upcoming actors/actresses...Martin Landeau, John Rhy-Davies (LotR), etc. Most 'historians' would want this one!

4 stars Less than meets the eye but the DVD bonuses save the day!
As a spectacle, this elaborate $44 million (1963 dollars) production has few equals, but as historical drama, it leaves something to be desired. The acting ranges from brilliant (Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar) to uneven (Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra). Richard Burton, as Mark Antony fluctuates between the two. Critical reaction to the film was as diverse as the performances. Bosley Crowther of the "New York Times" hailed "Cleopatra" as "a surpassing entertainment, one of the great epic films of our day," while over at the "New York Herald Tribune", Judith Crist called it "a monumental mouse." My opinion of the film lies somewhere in between. Long before the film's release, the advance publicity had pre-sold "Cleopatra". There was, after all, the chemistry of the two stars--Taylor and Burton--who, while playing the passionate lovers, had themselves become passionate lovers, much to the scandal and delight of everyone in the world except their spouses at the time, Eddie Fisher and Sybil Burton. Despite the film being the most popular release of 1963, "Cleopatra" had gone so far over budget that it could never possibly bring back its costs at the box office--at least, not for a very long time. Significantly, after "Cleopatra" the costume spectacle disappeared from American screens. The audiences who approached the film believing they'd encounter the ultimate in sensationalism were surprised--perhaps even disappointed--to discover something else entirely. At a running length of over four hours, the production often proved as tedious as it was long, detailing carefully not only the love affair between Cleopatra and Anthony but also the workings of the political systems, both in Rome and on the Mediterranean. Director Joseph Mankiewicz's modern films such as "All About Eve" and "A Letter to Three Wives" offer brittle, sophisticated character studies with biting dialogue and fascinatingly devious people embroiling themselves deeply into difficult situations, and the filmmaker viewed the material of "Cleopatra" as more of the same--only in a different setting. Therefore, his conception of the romantic triangle involving Cleopatra, Antony, and Caesar was not offered as an episode from the past, between stuffy figures whose motivations are beyond our comprehension. For Mankiewicz, people are the same, several thousand years ago or today--only the costumes change--and these figures emerge not so much as legendary giants from times gone by but as interesting people. Where the film's major fault lies, is that Mankiewicz did not maintain a proper tone throughout. At moments, the characters are provided with modern equivalents for expressions they might have tried to use informally--"Hey, dude, hand me that spear!" type of talk. In other scenes, however, they speak in elevated language, hinting at Shakespearean poetry. Either approach might have been highly effective but the two just don't jell when mixed. As for such other elements as Alex North's brilliant score, the Oscar-winning costumes, sets, and photography, no such problems emerged. Mankiewicz and his designers managed to effectively combine what information they were able to lay their hands on about the sights and scenes of the ancient world with a modern approach to fashion and styles, giving us a unique world that belongs totally in this film--neither pure history nor pure speculation, but rather an imaginative combination of the two. Aside from the quibbles above, Fox has provided an outstanding DVD of "Cleopatra." The main attraction is a new documentary called "Cleopatra: The Film That Changed Hollywood." Hosted by Robert Culp, this two-hour program combines film clips, behind the scenes footage, and recent interviews to create a terrific look at the troubled production. The interviews include a few surviving (at the time) actors such as Hume Cronyn and Martin Landau, plus 1995 bits from Roddy McDowall; unfortunately, Elizabeth Taylor is nowhere to be found. This is a very entertaining documentary and it's been afforded a top-notch presentation. At a list price of $26.98, this DVD is a bargain. Highly recommended if only for all the marvelous DVD bonuses. [filmfactsman]

4 stars A true rarity -- an intelligent epic
One of the greatest casualties of the traumas at 20th Century Fox studios was the film that the future of the company depended upon. "Cleopatra" was hit by every calamity imaginable from Fox's declining fortunes to its fragile star's precarious health to Egypt's refusal to allow the filmmakers to shoot locations in that country because of Taylor's adoption of the Jewish faith after her marriage to Eddie Fisher. The wonder of “Cleopatra” is that when the film is good, it is as good as these rather top-heavy spectacles get. Miss Taylor's verbal skirmishes with Rex Harrison's Julius Caesar in the film's first half are as witty and barbed as anything writer/director Joseph Mankiewicz wrote for “All About Eve.” If the second half of “Cleopatra” is a disappointment, the same can certainly be said of “Gone With the Wind.” Many people took issue with Taylor's occasionally strident performance as the Egyptian queen, but even the most vocal of her detractors would have to admit that she is unquestionably the most gorgeous aspect of a visually gorgeous movie. And none of it originated in a computer.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST is a suspense thriller that finds Cary Grant in the role of Roger Thornhill, a Manhattan advertising executive mistaken for a spy. Considered by many to be the prototypical pure action movie (creating the template for later James Bond and Indiana Jones films), the film is a cross-country roller-coaster ride with Alfred Hitchcock at the helm. The film is duly famous for several classic and indelible scenes, including the desert biplane encounter and the Mt. Rushmore climax. The original title was THE MAN IN LINCOLN'S NOSE, which was replaced by a reference to a line from William Shakespeare's HAMLET (in which Hamlet says, "I am but mad north-north-west."). The magical combination of Hitchcock and the debonair Grant--who made four wonderful films together--makes NORTH BY NORTHWEST a suspense-filled standout. When Thornhill finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, the world as he knows it comes to an end. Suddenly danger threatens as the hapless businessman is targeted as an American intelligence agent and set up as a killer. All of Thornhill's attempts to straighten things out only make matters worse--and soon the desperate man is on the run from murderous foreign operatives, the CIA, and the police. The supporting cast, including Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, and Martin Landau, is uniformly excellent. Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Special Edition

Based on the real-life events surrounding a military-style drug raid on the poor, predominantly black housing project of Arlington Springs, director Tim Disney’s AMERICAN VIOLET shines an unflinching spotlight on the shameful racial profiling practices of a corrupt district attorney in a rural Texas town. The raid, which occurs after a tip by a single informant (a former mental patient bullied by the police to name names), targets among others Dee, a single mother of four with no prior drug charges (excellently played by newcomer Nicole Beharie). When the defendant assigned to her case tries to pressure her into a guilty plea in exchange for a 10-year suspended sentence, Dee refuses, rightly insisting that she has done no wrong. But with the vast majority of the prosecuted taking plea deals, even Dee’s mother (Alfre Woodard) thinks she’s a fool. Dee’s heroic defiance soon wins acolytes in ACLU lawyer David Cohen (Tim Blake Nelson) and his assistant, Byron Hill (Malcolm Barrett). The Yankee lawyers team up with local consul Sam Conroy (Will Patton), a gun-toting Texan battling his own past racist demons, building their case against Calvin Beckett (Michael O’Keefe), the villainous D.A. whose tough-on-crime tactics are a smokescreen for his blatantly racially motivated tactics. Set against the backdrop of 2000’s Bush vs. Gore contest, AMERICAN VIOLET’s left-leaning polemic is clear; but the film’s core message of the fight against injustice rings loud, and is underscored by powerful performances from Beharie, Woodard, and O’Keefe--whose dramatic unraveling during Beckett’s deposition speech is, alone, worth the price of admission. Based on the acclaimed and popular E.L. Doctorow novel, RAGTIME tells the intricate story of four New York families--three of which are fictional--at the turn of the 20th century, each indicative of that time in American history, and highlighting some of the downsides of following the American Dream. Starving immigrant artist Tateh (Mandy Patinkin) will eventually set off to make his fortune in Hollywood, but not without a chance encounter with Evelyn Nesbit (Elizabeth McGovern in the role of the real-life showgirl). Nesbit was the center of the infamous (and, in the film, the very compelling) Thaw-White murder case, in which her mentally unstable millionare husband Harry K. Thaw (Robert Joy) murdered her lover, the famed architect Stanford White (Norman Mailer). Another storyline follows the disintegration of an upper-class American family headed by Mary Steenburgen (simply named Mother) and James Olson (Father). Their seemingly perfect existence is shattered when black ragtime pianist Coalhouse Walker (Howard E. Rollins), loosely modeled on Scott Joplin, begins to romance a pregnant young woman living in their home (Debbie Allen). Walker, a dignified man, turns to rage when he is tormented by local racists. One of the most impressive moments in this ambitious film is the appearance of veteran actor James Cagney who, at 81, plays feisty Police Commissioner Waldo. A young boy draws on the power of magic in order to unite a noble healer and a wounded warrior in Toronto filmmaker Charles Officer's poetic feature directorial debut. Jude (Karen LeBlanc) is a hospital nurse afflicted with sickle-cell anemia. Her 12-year-old son, Ciel (Daniel J. Gordon), longs for her to get well, and begins casting a series of healing spells in hopes that they will ease her suffering. Into Jude and Ciel's life stumbles Silence (Clark Johnson), an underground fighter who has just taken a pummeling. Silence was in need of stitches, and Jude was the nurse on duty at the time he was admitted. An imposing figure who's just as taciturn as his name suggests, Silence is still shaken by the recent death of his trainer--a man who was as much a father figure as he was a coach. Not only has the loss shaken Silence emotionally, but it's also forced him to take on some heavy new responsibilities.
