Lonelyland is an entertaining, occasionally impressive effort that bodes well for singer/songwriter Bob Schneider's future. The LP kicks off with "Metal and Steel," an acoustic number that is vaguely reminiscent of Paul Simon at his most Dylan-esque. Before the album is done, however, musical styles will twist and turn along the way, reminding one at times of everyone from Lenny Kravitz ("Jingy") to Bill Withers ("Bullets") to Elvis Costello-meets-Hootie & the Blowfish ("Better"). Schneider's lyrics speak of broken relationships, angst, and drug abuse, though there are hints of humor and happiness that shine through from time to time. Some of his imagery is awkward -- "Jingy" is about a metaphorical monkey on one's back, but the monkey sounds more like it's of the circus variety. Schneider needs to tame the occasional tendency to be too cute for his own good, both with his words and stylistically eclectic music. Sometimes an artist just needs to step back and take stock. Lauren Hoffman hasn't been heard from on record in seven years, and it's been nearly a decade since her sparkling debut, Megiddo, languished in Virgin Records purgatory, leading Hoffman to pull the plug on her major-label deal. All of which makes Choreography an all the more pleasant surprise. Returning to the dark, swirling atmospherics of her debut, the moody and gorgeous Choreography ups the ante with layers of textured production, sampling a potpourri of styles and handling them all with equal aplomb. The sum of her influences and much more, Hoffman apprenticed in fellow Virginian Shannon Worrell's underappreciated September 67 project (which Hoffman briefly joined), worked with Cracker's David Lowery (who produced her first EP and plays bass on Choreography's "Solipsist"), and took inspiration from the late Jeff Buckley, whose gut-wrenching honesty had a profound effect on her. Who says you can't teach an old diva new tricks? At 78, Omara Portuondo, the Cuban vocalist who had nearly settled into retirement before the advent of the Buena Vista Social Club in the late '90s gave her international recognition, makes a bold move with Gracias. Although Portuondo's Cuban roots are evident throughout -- as if she could ever lose them -- the singer looks toward Brazilian forms, into jazz and beyond for this collection, produced by Brazilians Alé Siqueira and Swami Jr. And if Portuondo sounds closer to 48 than her actual age, it's easy to imagine that was part of the plan: there is a barely contained youthful spryness to her delivery of this material, an implicit statement that Portuondo is thrilled to be stepping out of the proverbial box in which she's lived -- metaphorically speaking -- for the better part of a half-century.
