| | Secret Garden White Stones CD (1997)
Flow: Music And Beyond music CDs
$10.75 On their second album, duo Secret Garden play with the conventions of Celtic and neo-classical music, weaving in unexpected elements like Spanish guitars and Eastern European folk melodies as their muse dictates. Norwegian pianist Rolf Lovland composes striking instrumentals for which Fionnuala Sherry's violin supplies the ...
| | Neal Schon Beyond The Thunder CD (1995)
Flow: Music And Beyond songs
$11.85 With the release of former Journey guitarist Neal Schon's simmering instrumental debut, Beyond the Thunder, Higher Octave must be hoping that former rock god lightning will strike twice. Ex-Starship stringman Craig Chaquico's two acoustic projects have been phenomena, and there's no reason the thoughtful, inventive Schon can't achieve a similar splash. After years of bouncy, straightforward, and usually loud pop/rocking, Schon seems committed to calmly reflecting on the many places he's been over the years, and so keeps his melodies generally ...

| | Janet Jackson Number Ones CDs (2009)
Flow: Music And Beyond CD music
$15.98 Number Ones replaces Design of a Decade, released 14 years prior. Excepting the new song "Make Me" (hard neo-disco/funk excellence), each song here was indeed a number one hit on Billboard's various charts, though "Got 'Til It's Gone" sneaks through a side door via the Japanese charts. One number one, oddly, is missing: "So Excited," a perfectly fine, 2006 single which topped the club chart. This set is more thorough with 1986-1996, too, adding Herb Alpert's "Diamonds" -- which would not have been out of place on Control, given Jam & Lewis' production and Janet's ...

| | Esthero Wikked Lil' GRRRLS CD (2005)
Flow: Music And Beyond album
$8.39 A full seven years after her debut, Canadian vocalist Esthero (AKA Jen-Bea Englishman) returned with WIKKED LIL' GRRRLS. Much more eclectic than the trip-hop-fueled BREATH FROM ANOTHER, this 2005 album finds Esthero moving deftly from driving funk-rock (the pop-culture call-to-arms "We R in Need of a Musical Revolution") to jazzy pop ("Everyday Is a Holiday [With You]," featuring Sean Lennon) to soul-tinged hip-hop ("Gone," with rapper Cee-Lo). Throughout the record, Esthero's bold, nuanced vocals ably carry the tunes, often calling to mind Pink, albeit with added subtlety and an even wider stylistic range. Breaking up the mix are wonderfully relaxed Sade-like tracks, most notably "Thank Heaven 4 You," a lilting love song, and the percussion-heavy "My Torture." Although fans of earlier Esthero might be surprised by the overt dynamics of WIKKED LIL' GRRRLS, the album marks a substantial leap forward for this talented performer.
"Wikked Lil' Grrrls" is a sexy, sophistcated blend of hip-hop, jazz, dance, rock and soul. Add Cee-Lo Green of Goodie ...

| | Davis Jones Land Of Stranded Dreams CD (2007)
Flow: Music And Beyond album
$12.65 Born in Akron, Ohio, Davis spent his childhood listening to records from his father’s massive collection of rock, soul, and folk. These early influences emerged when he taught himself to play the guitar, and stuck when he began writing his own music in 2003. Davis’ songs blend the populist traditions of Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie with the contemporary acoustic soul of Elliott Smith and Amos Lee. It is music boiled down to an organic essence, one based on revelations and shared experience, not showboating. In August of 2004, Davis moved to California from Columbus, Ohio. After waiting tables in Los Angeles for a few months, he moved to San Francisco and released his first album, From Ohio. A record of heartfelt coming-of-age themes, Davis’s debut hearkened back to the Midwest experience while embracing the coastal culture of California. The Heartland, released in 2006, was the second helping of original songs bridging his Ohio roots and a newfound, sunrise-over-Golden-Gate vibe. Within a year of The Heartland’s release, Davis went from being a regular on the open mic circuit to booking shows at famed San Francisco venues, including Café Du Nord, Hotel Utah, and the Red Devil ...
