Never was there a truer cliché than the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, something the U.S. Bombs have been confirming since the release of their debut single, "Scouts of America," back in 1995. Reduce the band's sound to its constituent pieces, and you're left with heaps of rifled old-school punk riffs, guitar leads, and rhythms littered across the floor. Glue them back together, and you'd have one killer British punk compilation, but what would be missing is the ephemeral modern sensibility that the group brings to all their tracks. So, in reality, you've heard all of Back at the Laundromat before, but never like this. Opening with a military tattoo ripped straight from the digits of Stiff Little Fingers, in quick order the Bombs splatter the tracks with note-perfect punk recreations, spurred by the same sense of nihilism that fired the original bands. What sets them apart from being generic old-school copyists is their predilection for slamming together riffs and rhythms from distinctly different sources. Take the anthemic "Die Alone," for example: a shotgun wedding between the Pistols' signature riff and a blushing Clash-esque lead guitar, it's sheer brilliance. Drummer Chip Hanna's SLF fixation makes for some equally unexpected but fabulous bedfellows, notably on "Cirenda," where the Ulstermen's beat bangs straight into a shoutalong Sham 69. And for the patriotic, America's own New York Dolls are an equally obvious influence. And so it goes, across a dozen melody-driven, high-energy anthems that are sure to set your pulse racing. Lyrically, too, the Bombs take their cue from the old school, as Duane Peters spits and growls his discontent. The music industry gets several good kickings, as does blind patriotism, fashion, and even disco. Yet unlike many of their new-school contemporaries, the band are not so much politicized as disgruntled; in their world, nihilism still rules with all the frenzied fun that inevitably entails. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

On GROUP SEX, the Circle Jerks' second full-length album, the band makes no great changes in its musical style. On the other hand, there really was no need for revision. Keith Morris (also an early vocalist for Black Flag) and his band mates had pretty much hit the nail on the head the first time out (WILD IN THE STREETS, appended to GROUP on some CD editions). The Jerks play the sort of very fast and very snotty punk rock--complete with thin, weedy vocals--that eventually became all the rage with such chart-topping bands as Green Day, the Offspring, and No Doubt.
As their name and the album title would suggest, the Circle Jerks are not a subtle band. "I Just Want Some Skank" and "World Up My Ass" stand as further examples of their in-your-face lewdness. Standout numbers include "Beverly Hills," an extremely pointed attack on the "upper class," ...

Back At The Laundromat songs
$9.95 The punk nihilistic attitude is surely still evident on the U.S. Bombs' fourth release for Hellcat Records. What's more prevalent, however, is the political tone the album takes in reaction to the events of 9/11 and the sphere of influence involving the federal government. The tune "Framed" is ...

Back At The Laundromat music CDs
$13.05 Seam had never had the most stable lineup, but Sooyoung Park and Lexi Mitchell had maintained a partnership, personal and otherwise, from the Bitch Magnet days. That all changed after the excellent The Problem With Me, and the end result was the band's most fraught album yet, with Park working with a wholly new band and conveying more than a few desperate and frustrated sentiments in the music and lyrics. Starting the album with "Berlitz," using the reference to language guides as a metaphor for failures to communicate and their repercussions, was as much as a sign as any. That said, Park's general goal at balancing sudden intensity with restraint and quiet beauty remained intact, and at times, such as "Haole Redux," succeeded spectacularly. The new members -- guitarist Reg Shrader, bassist William Shin, and drummer Chris Manfrin -- all do a pretty fine job at replacing their counterparts from The Problem With Me, something further helped by the reappearance of Brad Wood as producer. Still, there is a change and maybe even a lack -- Shin in particular, though still spot on, misses the gentle melodicism that Mitchell had provided, and as a result the dramatic melancholia of the past feels a bit more ...

America defined the soft-rock sound of the '70s. They wanted to be Crosby, Stills and Nash so badly that they figured out a way to not only pull it off, but beat CSN at their own game, logging even more hit singles than their chief inspiration. THE COMPLETE GREATEST HITS, ...
