Yo Soy Tono music CDs
$10.35 Cuban salsa star Isaac Delgado offers up a typically festive album with EN PRIMER PLANA, which garnered a Grammy nod in 2007. While Delgado's resonant vocals are clearly the main draw, PRIMER PLANA also boasts a guest appearance by singer Victor Manuelle (on the bright opening track, "La Mujer Que Mas Te Duele") and some ...

| | This Land Is Your Land Live: The Folk Years CD (2003)
Yo Soy Tono songs
$9.29 Recorded live at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsuburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 21 and 22, 2002.
The mighty windy collection of live folk songs This Land Is Your Land Live: The Folk Years was recorded on a two-night folk revival held at Carnegie Mellon University in early 2002. Although all of the acts sound a little older and many sound noticeably gruffer, acts like the Kingston Trio, Roger McGuinn, and Randy Sparks & the Minstrels prove that they can still turn on the folk machine and crank out some pretty faithful reinterpretations of their hits. Two unexpected highlights are the Brothers Four's contributions, "Greenfields" and "Try to Remember," both of which sound every bit as rich and full (if not richer and fuller) than the versions from decades past. Unfortunately, a synth-disco rendition of Glenn Yarbrough's "Baby the Rain Must Fall" sounds ...
| | Juan Jose Carranza Mareas CD (2004)
Yo Soy Tono album
$12.15 Juan Carranza's voice is not his best asset. It has a nasal tone and sounds lightly piercing and thin, as it lacks rich harmonics. But the man can sing in tune and convincingly negotiate ornamented melodies. In fact, his voice has considerably improved since the rare vocal songs found on his previous albums -- and luckily too, since nine of the ten tracks on Mareas feature his singing. Carranza's songs have charm, appeal, and the overemphasized feelings one expects from nuevo flamenco music. His singing pushes aside his stellar guitar playing, which is truly a shame, and his songwriting is somewhat more conventional than the instrumental tunes featured on his first two CDs. His accompanying group has been completely revamped and now consists of a bassist (Sylvain Lafrance) and three percussionists adding Spanish, Latin, and North African colors. The absence of flutist François Richard further tones down the Latin jazz mood woven into Playa Gitana. On the other hand, the songs are spirited, lively, full of sun and sand. Carranza delivers a more than honest performance, especially in "Mareas," "Persiguiendo la Luna," and "Viento Embrujado." If his songs bear a less distinctive signature than his instrumentals, they will nonetheless appeal to a wider audience. ~ François Couture

| | Bruce Haack Electric Lucifer CD (1970) With Book; Remastered
Yo Soy Tono album
$15.79 After hearing late-'60s rock & roll from his friend Chris Kachulis, Bruce Haack added acid rock to his already diverse sonic palette. The result was 1970s Electric Lucifer, a psychedelic, anti-war song cycle about the battle between heaven and hell. The underlying concept of this concept album is "Powerlove," a divine force that not only unites humanity but forgives Lucifer his transgressions as well. But though this album extols the healing powers of peace and love, Electric Lucifer uses often menacing music and lyrics to get its point across. "War" depicts the battle royale between good and evil with a martial beat and salvos from dueling synthesizers; a child's voice murmurs "I don't want to play anymore, " and a funereal synth melody replaces the electronic battle march. Haack's marriage of rock rhythms and his unique electronics creates a sound unlike either his previous work or the era's psychedelic rock, but songs like "Incantation" and "Word Game," with their percolating beats, buzzing synths and vocoders, are much trippier than most acid rock. The strangely forlorn "Song of the Death Machine" sounds a bit like a short-circuiting HAL singing "My Darling Clementine," while "Word Game" features cool, dark electro-rock and brain-teasing lyrics like "Ray of sun/Reason/Knowledge/No legends." Kachulis sings on both of these tracks, and his deadpan vocals complement the weirdness going on around him nicely. ...
